Cher stars as Cherilyn Burke-Bancroft, a sophisticated hairstylist, who runs her own salon in downtown Manhattan. Cherilyn Bancroft's co-workers include: a young and pregnant shampoo-girl, Candice Walters-Davenport (played by Tara Reid), a noisy receptionist, Bonnie Clemens (played by Sally Struthers), a working mother of 5 and best friend to Cherilyn, Roxie Millerstein (played by Roseanne).
Cherilyn lives in a Manhattan apartment with her recently divorced sister, Caroline Burke-Thompson (played by Kirstie Alley). Cherilyn's daughter, Crystal Bancroft (played by Marla Sokoloff) lives her Cherilyn's ex-husband, Mitch Bancroft (played by Ed O'Neill). Cherilyn is currently dating Rob Walters (played by Tim Allen), also is her co-worker, Candice's divorced father. But, the make it even weirder, Candice's mother and Rob's ex-wife, Shirley Walters (played by Alley Mills) is Cherilyn and Caroline's landlady, and Rob Walters has a son (who is Candice's little brother), Jason (who is played by Frankie Muniz), a teenage boy who is having trouble finding his true self until he turns to Cherilyn for guidance.
