Why some shows won't be out on DVD

Our newspaper had an article today about why you won't see some of your favorite TV shows released on DVD. They say, for example, that BH 90210 won't get on because there was too much music that would have to get release approval from the copyright owners. They had over 40 music episodes.

I do have to wonder though with American Dreams coming out. Maybe that's easier since the music is older, and Dick Clark probably had the rights before any shows aired.

I would believe that it is the case with most recent shows, that music rights for potential dvd releases were already taken care of ahead of time so that that won't be an issue in holding up a dvd release of a show. I don't think the age of the songs themselves is a factor. Using songs from say, Motown, or the Beach Boys, is still very profitable for the record/publishing companies. With shows like 90210, I think unless the song was essential to the episode, they should just remove it. A situation where a song is just playing in the background of a scene wouldn't be a great loss if they just removed it. It'd be less expensive for the studios and they'd be getting the dvds out to fans who want them.
