Default the final episode

I just saw "Consider Me Gone" (the last episode of Alf) for the first time.

It seemed to end rather abruptly (not to mention unhappily) with Alf being found by the Alien Task Force as the Tanners looked on.

My question is, is this how the series was meant to end? Did the producers intend to film another season or more episodes, and had the series cancelled on them? Obviously with the release of the Project Alf movie 6 years later, the story was not completed.

It just seems like such an odd, irregular ending to this series, I have to think this isn't quite how things were meant to be.

I don't think it was intended as the final.

"Consider Me gone" was intended to be the season ending cliffhanger in the Spring of 1990. Unfortunately, it became the final episode of ALF TV series when contract disputes throughout the Summer between NBC and producers (Alien Productions) could not be resolved, resulting in NBC cancelling ALF from the schedule of shows for the new Fall season.
"Project: ALF" (the TV movie) was intentionally written to have an open ending, so that there would always be the potential for the return of ALF in the future.
Watch for "ALF's Hit New Talk Show", taped 11/19/03, that is scheduled to air on TV Land cable network in Jan., 2004 (exact date and time unknown). Hopefully, this pilot concept will be the start of a renewed career for ALF as a TV star.

I read the people- article in 2000 (where are they now)
and anne schedeen said that everybod knew, they have just one more episode (Consider Me Gone) and max wright was the first person who walked off the set and everybody was happy that the seies came to an end.
On the other hand- I've heard that the writers wrote 2 more episodes for season 5 at that time

That episode was not meant to be the final one. ALF was supposed to start again in 1991 but Paul Fusco ran out of ideas and ALF did not come back until 1996 when Project ALF came out.

I think it was on ET, but the fate of ALF was in the air at the end of season 4. NBC told the producers that they were up in the air on if the show would be renewed but to go ahead with the cliffjanger. NBC told the producers that even if the show wasn't picked up next season that they would be given one additional episode in the fall to wrap up the storyline...obviously that didn't happen until six years later.

"Project ALF" was okay but a bit of a disappointment without the Tanners around for ALF to annoy.

Project ALF was about Alf being taken to a labratory for tests. There are two cops who protect ALF. I forget what the rest is about.
