Roseanne was one of those shows that had major continuing storylines throughout the run of the show.
While most shows have a running theme, such as the meddling in-laws on EL Raymond or the wacky foursome on Will & Grace, Roseanne really had a soap opera feel to it. The characters were well-developed, even into Roseanne and Dan's childhoods. On most sitcoms today, each show is sort of contained in and of itself. There's a problematic situation, and it's worked out. Roseanne had a lot of those shows as well, but the characters fell in and out of love, had children, and the show dug deeper than most. Another show that was this way, to a somewhat lesser degree, was Wings, and Cheers in a sense with the Sam and Diane storyline. I used to watch a lot of soap operas, and when I watch Roseanne, I often have a feeling of...what's going to happen with David and Darlene or Mark and Becky or Jackie and Fisher ?I'm always waiting to see what's going to happen next. It's a continuing saga. The show is a blast! |

Roseanne Barr always wanted her show to be different because all the problems would not be over in one episode.
