I have been trying to find that out myself because he used it twice.

At least.

The most obvious time was the ep where Lamont's old flame Judy Edwards was going to marry Fred.

I think someone said the name J. Ru Perot was probably a make-believe name created by the producers

Yeah - but you'd think there was more to it than that.

Well then, I guess we may never know.

I just remember in the Judy Edwards ep, Judy saying something like "he wasn't using the name Lamont back then, he was J. Ru Perot." Then Fred said "yeah, he looks like one."

That's why I thought there might be some "deeper" meaning behind the name.

Default Why?

I always wondered why Lamont was using another name when he knew Judy the first time around. Can anybody answer that one?

Default Dialog with Judy

If I recall correctly, when Judy told Fred that Lamont did'nt use his real name back then, Fred said "who'd he say he was, SuperFly?", and then she replies, "No, he told me his name was J. Rue Perot".

I'm 48 years old and watched most of the series when it was originally broadcast, and many reruns since then, and I don't know of a real person of the name J. Rue Perot. I suppose the scriptwriters made it up, perhaps hijacking the surname of Ross Perot, who even then was a up-and-coming name in the business world, plus the French pronunciation may have made chosen to make it sound distinguished.

That's what I kind of thought. He does also go by H. Ross Perot too.

Twenty-one years later this topic is still alive! I found this message board because I just watched an episode of Sanford and Son then, as best as I could, I googled this name he used. Of course we all remember him using it in the episode with Judy, but I just watched the episode where Lamont found an old briefcase filled with cash. Lamont disguised his voice and called the police to ask what his rights were, and he use the name J Rue Perot . It may have a deeper meaning as Fred Sanford is the real name of Redd Foxx’s brother. Perhaps we may never know!
