"Yes, we have to say it. Remember, this is just a football game, no matter who wins or loses. An unspeakable tragedy, confirmed to us by ABC News in New York City. John Lennon, outside of his apartment building on the west side of New York City, the most famous, perhaps of all of the Beatles, shot twice in the back, rushed to Roosevelt Hospital, dead... on... arrival." -- Howard Cosell during December 8, 1980's Monday Night Football broadcast.

I've seen the last days of John Lennon on "Behind the Music" about 2 years ago. Howard Costell heard about John Lennon's death as seen in the movie "Monday Night Mayhem". This had happened about 23 years ago that John Lennon was killed outside of the Dakota building in New York City. The album "Double Fantasy" was released just before his death.

Double Fantasy was such a great album. I don't care what Yoko-bashers say, I also loved her stuff on the album, easily the most "pop" material she ever did (even tho her new wave album from 1983 comes close)

It's still so hard to believe. I remember hearing the news like it happened yesterday. I was 22.
People were reeling for weeks and weeks, stunned beyond words. I think it's the most profound loss in the music industry ever. |

This tribute to John appeared on George Harrison's 1981 album Somewhere In England. It's a very significant song, as all three then-surviving Beatles played on the track.
All Those Years Ago (Harrison) I'm shouting all about love While they treated you like a dog When you were the one who had made it so clear All those years ago I'm talking all about how to give They don't act with much honesty But you point the way to the truth when you say "All you need is love" Living with good and bad I always looked up to you Now we're left cold and sad By someone the devil's best friend Someone who offended all We're living in a bad dream They've forgotten all about mankind And you were the one they backed up to the wall All those years ago You were the one who imagined it all All those years ago Deep in the darkest night I send out a prayer to you Now in the world of light Where the spirit free of the lies And all else that we despised They've forgotten all about God He's the only reason we exist Yet you were the one that they said was so weird All those years ago You said it all though not many had ears All those years ago You had control of our smiles and our tears All those years ago |

From the 1982 Paul McCartney album Tug Of War.
Here Today (McCartney) And if I said I really knew you well What would your answer be? If you were here today. Well, knowing you You'd probably laugh and say That we were worlds apart. If you were here today. But as for me I still remember how it was before And I am holding back the tears no more I love you. What about the time we met? Well I suppose that you could say that We were playing hard to get, Didn't understand a thing But we could always sing. What about the night we cried? Because there wasn't any reason left To keep it all inside, Never understood a word But you were always there with a smile. And if I say I really loved you And was glad you came along, Then you were here today, For you were in my song Here today. |

From the Elton John album Jump Up! (1982)
Empty Garden (Hey, Hey Johnny) (John/Taupin) What happened here, As the New York sunset disappeared? I found an empty garden among the flagstones there. Who lived here? He must have been a gardener that cared a lot, Who weeded out the tears and grew a good crop. And now it all looks strange. It's funny how one insect can damage so much grain. And what's it for, This little empty garden by the brownstone door? And in the cracks along the sidewalk nothing grows no more. Who lived here? He must have been a gardener that cared a lot, Who weeded out the tears and grew a good crop. And we are so amazed! We're crippled and we're dazed.... A gardener like that one, no one can replace. And I've been knocking, but no one answers. And I've been knocking, most all the day. Oh and I've been calling,oh hey, hey, Johnny! Can't you come out to play? And through their tears, Some say he farmed his best in younger years. But he'd have said that roots grow stronger, if only he could hear. Who lived there? He must have been a gardener that cared a lot, Who weeded out the tears and grew a good crop. Now we pray for rain, and with every drop that falls..... We hear, we hear your name..... And I've been knocking, but no one answers. And I've been knocking, most all the day. Oh and I've been calling,oh hey, hey, Johnny! Can't you come out to play, In your empty garden? Johnny? Can't you come out to play, in your empty garden? |

From Sting's 1987 album, Nothing Like The Sun.
Fragile (Sting) If blood will flow when flesh and steel are one Drying in the colour of the evening sun Tomorrow's rain will wash the stains away But something in our minds will always stay Perhaps this final act was meant To clinch a lifetime's argument That nothing comes from violence and nothing ever could For all those born beneath an angry star Lest we forget how fragile we are On and on the rain will fall Like tears from a star like tears from a star On and on the rain will say How fragile we are how fragile we are On and on the rain will fall Like tears from a star like tears from a star On and on the rain will say How fragile we are how fragile we are How fragile we are how fragile we are |

Borrowed Time
(Lennon) When I was younger Living confusion and deep dispair When I was younger ah hah Living illusion of freedom and power When I was younger Full of ideas and broken dreams (my friend) When I was younger ah hah Everything simple but not so clear Living on borrowed time Without a thought for tomorrow Living on borrowed time Without a thought for tomorrow Now I am older The more that I see the less that I know for sure Now I am older ah hah The future is brighter and now is the hour Living on borrowed time Without a thought for tomorrow Living on borrowed time Without a thought for tomorrow Good to be older Would not exchange a single day or a year Good to be older ah hah Less complications everything clear Living on borrowed time Without a thought for tomorrow Living on borrowed time Without a thought for tomorrow Oh yes, it all seemed so bloody easy then. You know, like what to wear, very serious-like, you know. How am I going to get rid of the pimples? Does she really love me? All that crap. But now I don't bother about that **** no more; I know she loves me. All I gotta bother about is standing up. |

I'll always remember the day it happened. I was in 7th grade & I was getting ready for school, turned the radio on & the 1st thing I heard was his name & then that he'd died. I was already a huge Beatle fan at that point. I went straight to my mother's room & she was already up watching it on the news. No words.
I went to school in shock & I told the one other kid who was into the Beatles. John Rivera. He didn't believe me, until the other kids outside the school building around us confirmed it. I'll never forget the way he stood staring at the ground. I think the one frustrating question that lingers for those who enjoy John's music is "What if?" It would've been incredible to see an inevitable Beatle reunion. I would've been very interested in hearing his opinions on the changing tides in popular music- hip hop/rap, grunge, the boybands, ClearChannel, downloading, RIAA, etc etc. How can we go forward into something we're not sure of?... |

"......you may say I'm a dreamer, but I'm not the only one. I hope someday you'll join us, and the world will live as one."
The world misses you John! RIP!
