Gold Key Comic Books and Witman Comic Books were both very popular back when I was growing up in th 1970s.I guess Gold Key and Witman belonged to the same publishing company, because they both carried all the same famous cartoon characters.I used to collect these comic books like crazy, and still have a lot of them today. The one thing I always found interesting about these comics, was the many notable differences in the characters,in contrast to their animated cartoon sources. For instance,in The Pink Panther comics,The Pink Panther talked.Unlike in the cartoons, where he only ever spoke on two occasions.Normally he was mute. In the Woody Woodpecker comics,Woody,s niece and nephew Knothead and Splinter, who were rarely seen in the cartoons, were a regular staple of the comics. Not to mention,in the cartoons the kids would refer to Woody as uncle Woody. In the comics they just called him Woody. One other thing I noticed, was how Woody appeared to be the best of friends with Wally Walrus in the comics.Whereas in the cartoons,Wally was among Woody,s common opponents. The Looney Tunes seemed to have numerous notable differences. When Bugs Bunny and Daffy Duck were together in the comics, they appeared to get along remarkabley well.Unlike in the cartoons, where Daffy is always jealously pitted against Bugs whenever they,re seen together, with Daffy,s famous phrase to Bugs'you,re despicable'.In Porky Pig,s comics, you saw a lot more of Petunia. Not to mention,Porky had a companion pig character named Cicero, who did not exist in the cartoons.Perhaps the biggest difference of them all,was The Road Runner comics. While E.Coyote wasn,t much different, except that he regularly talked.Almost the only time he talked in the cartoons, was when Bugs was his opponent. As for The Road Runner, big difference. For starters, there were four road runners.Papa Road Runner and his three sons, who were nothing at all like the cartoon Road Runner. Not the same character at all.Even these Road Runners had way more expression than their animated cartoon source. These comic book Road Runners always spoke in a rhyming pattern. The storylines were also much more interesting and much more attractive than the Road Runner cartoons.Plus Bugs Bunny occasionally appeared, being stalked by While E.Coyote with The Four Road Runners coming to his rescue.Daffy Duck also appeared occasionally. He would be in the same vote as Bugs. While E.Coyote would stalk Daffy too, with The Four Road Runners on Daffy,s side all the way. As a kid I never understood why these comic books were so different from their animated cartoon sources. But now I realise the reason.Different people are responsible for the cartoon characters. The comics were done by a completely different group of cartoonists.Making the animated cartoons and the comic books two different worlds. If you know what I,m saying.

If anyone thinks they'd like to go back and revisit those days by buying the Gold Key/Whitman back issues, here's an online comic book store that has quite a few:

Well, yes there's that, but the main reason is that the characters were created for gag/action-based animation, and needed a large overhaul to be interesting in a story-based medium such as the comics |
