Who do you think got the line wrong on this episode? Ralph says "Pins and needles, needles and pins, it's a happy man that grins" while Alice and Norton say "A happy man is a man who grins". I have a feeling it was the second one and Gleason just delivered it wrong when he said it. The second one has more of a ring to it.

Well, it's a subtle difference but a difference just the same. It was probably Gleason who said it wrong at first since Audrey and Art said it differently and then she closed out the show by saying "a happy woman is a woman who grins". It's like in the "Bensonhurst Bomber" when Ralph says to Norton, "Why would he say hey fatso, get outta the way"......when the actual line is "Hey--get a load of fatso there!". I think Jackie just had a habit of winging it if he forgot the actual lines.

Gleason was notorious for not rehearsing and I think these mistakes were the result of that. I agree that he was the one who had the needles and pins line wrong.
In the Bensonhurst Bomber, both he and Norton mess up the line. Earlier in the ep, Norton says "... and remember to say 'Hello there fatso'". I think the only one who didn't make a mistake on it was the big guy. Ralph also makes a huge mistake in that episode when he says "How can I knock out a guy that's bigger than Harvey" before Norton suggests that idea. If you notice, they both are rattled after that one and Ralph covers up by getting mad at Norton. |

I always liked the fact that they flubbed a line or two. It adds to the show's charm.

Yeah, because of the no rehursel policy, by Gleason, you can always catch a few flubs. Another good example is the episode, "A Woman's Work Is Never Done", Ralph is complaining to Norton about the house cleaning. Ralph says, "I've been scrubbing the floors......mopping everything!"
How do you mop everything?? He meant to say He was mopping the floors and scrubbing everything.
