Exclamation NEWS for Hilary Duff fans

After years of portraying the teenage TV character Lizzie McGuire, Hilary Duff is all grown up in the new video for her next single, "Come Clean."

While the 16-year-old Duff still looks basically the same as she does in the clip for her current single, "So Yesterday," it's her emotional portrayal that has matured in line with the song's reflective theme. Unlike her bratty first single off Metamorphosis, which told its listeners the only requirement for implementing change is a desire to do so, "Come Clean" is about looking at a situation carefully to fully understand what's at the heart of the matter.

"I'm shedding every color/ Trying to find a pigment of truth/ Beneath my skin," Duff sings in one verse, before launching into the chorus of "Let the rain fall down/I'm coming clean."

Showing Duff's contemplative emotional side and shattering the happy-go-lucky persona most of her fans are familiar with wasn't easy for video director Dave Meyers (Missy Elliott, Pink), who shot the "Come Clean" video on Sunday in Los Angeles.

"I'm trying to do something where you're taking her very seriously ... very dramatic and very feminine, and sort of almost sensual," he said before the shoot took place. "I don't think we’ve ever seen that from her. She's been a bit of a pop icon, so I'm just trying to give her a bit more credibility on an artist front."

Meyers took the rain reference Duff uses in her song and ran with it. The video is set in her house over the course of a rainy day. It opens in her bedroom with Duff singing in the sweats and tanktop she slept in. By the end of the day, the camera has moved to the bathroom, kitchen and living room, where Duff is eventually joined by her bandmates. As she moves from room to room, the camera periodically focuses on the rainfall outside, which gets stormier as the chorus comes around each time.

The inside scenes are intercut with close-up shots of a mysterious man in a car. In the end, he pulls into Duff's driveway where she comes out to greet him. The final shot is of a rain-soaked Duff about to speak to the person she's spent all day thinking about.

"We never do know if the guy in the end is a boyfriend or friend or what the drama is," Meyers said. "It's just all very photogenic and sophisticated and not too colorful."

While "So Yesterday" continues to garner top-40 radio play, both the "Come Clean" video and single are expected to surface in mid-January.

Duff has four more headlining shows slated before she tackles at least nine radio-sponsored package shows before the holidays.

Great, another video that MTV and other "music" channels can torture me with.

Oh lord. Ok, time for my two cents on Hilary Duff. I watched "Making the Tour: Hilary Duff", and look, I'll be the first to admit a good singer, but that child is VERY computerized. You cannot listen to her sing and REALLY think that is her voice. And I think that goes to show between her and Britney Spears, all you need is a kick ass computer and you're a pop celebrity. HOWEVER, I do have more respect for her after watching the interview b/c she GENUINELY does seem like a nice person. I mean, I could be wrong, but even after reading interviews w/ Tom Welling, who never says NEthing, he had all good things to say about her, and when asked about his wife he said, "No comment". So, I dunno, I don't think she's an amazing singer or actress, but she's fun, and she's quirky.

Sad Hilary Duff's Boyfriend Blues!

Hilary Duff's Boyfriend Blues!
December 2, 2003

Sixteen-year-old pop princess HILARY DUFF just filmed the second music video from her multi-million selling CD, Metamorphosis -- but she isn't singing "My Boyfriend's Back."

In fact, the teen queen tells ET she has a hard time finding someone to hook up with. "It is hard for me to have a relationship because I don't want to date anyone in the business, and I don't have time to go to regular school and meet normal people, so it's a mess," she admits.

ET was exclusively on the set when Hilary shot the highly anticipated video for "Come Clean," and on tonight's show, we give you a behind-the-scenes sneak peek.

"It is a cool song because it's not as upbeat as 'So Yesterday,' which was my first single," she says. "It is a little more relaxed and the video is a little more moody. 'Come Clean' is about a relationship. A square doesn't fit into a circle and, if you listen to the song, you can make it what you want."

"Come Clean" takes place in a make-believe home. It is a rainy day and the roof leaks, and Hilary has pots all over the house trying to catch the dripping H20. Then her band comes to hang out, but the person Hilary really wants to see isn't there. You can tell she wants to phone him, but doesn't; and he tries to phone her from his car, but can't get a signal. Finally, he shows up and they just look at each other. The End.

Cut to reality. Can a glam gal like Hilary relate to wanting to call a guy that badly?

"I am 16 and that does happen to everyone," she admits, "and maybe you are too shy to express your feelings about how you feel. You're like, 'I want him to call me,' but you don't want to call him. It is all about a game in this day and age which is kind of sad. You have to play the game and sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't. But I definitely feel that sometimes."
