Default To those who have a slow dial-up connection

This is for those of you who have a slow dial-up connection. At the current moment I'm using a free internet service called Netzero because my regular cable connection is down right now. Anyway, at first the connection was so slow it took SO forever to load even in IE and Netscape. Then, I remembered I had another browser on disk called Opera so I loaded that up and now the internet goes a heck of a lot faster than it did with IE and Netscape. There's even a feature where you can turn off all graphics on the page to make it load even faster still. I suggest if you have 56k you give Opera a try and watch how fast SO will load up for you. Just thought I'd pass this bit of info. along for those who would like to SO to load faster.

I don't really care how fast my access is, just as long as I have access! I'm getting the net now through an error in the PeoplePC disk The only bad thing is, I have to dial up twice, and I can only stay online for 4 hour intervals. Oh well.

There is also an option in the user control panel / edit options where you can automatically turn off all avatars, attachments and signatures. Of course speed was one of the reasons images in signatures were turned off in the first place.

Does Opera also block ads and popups? I hope not.

Thanks for the info! My connection is unimagineably slow, so I'll definitely give it a try.

I know, but I tried that and it was still loading up really slow. Although, I have all images on through Opera and it's loading up twice as fast as dial-up would take to load one page.

When you turn off all images, it still has text where the images would be. Kind of like an alt tag. It doesn't block pop-ups unless of course you have a Pop Up Stopper like I do on every computer. But if it pops up it will open a new window in the Opera browser which is easy to exit out of, hehe. It really is a fast browser even with a cable connection, which is what I usually have except tonight. I think everyone should give it a try even if you don't have 56k. And it won't ruin IE so you can still browse in either one.

You're welcome.

I don't know if you guys will think it's any faster, but I think it is. Especially, compared to how long it was taking for this site to load without it. I don't know how you people can stand to have dial-up, it's so frustrating. I bet half of you are yelling at your computer to hurry up. I know I was before I installed this.

I don't know how I'm able to stand it either, sometimes. I told Mrs. R.N. Harris that I've come *this* close to turning into the Hulk because it irks me to no end. She sure wouldn't be able to stand having dialup every night. I'm going to check out that site, 'cause anything's better than this.

I used to have all kinds of dial-up services back in the day. Way before I came to this board though. I had aol and dozens of local internet services until my cable company started offering cable internet in our area. Then that was the end of dial-up for me. Although, it sucks because we lost our cable connection due to some rain and a little wind. Thank goodness, for this back up dial-up plan I had.

I want cable so bad. Someday I'm going to drop this dialup crap for good. What really annoys me more than anything are the random disconnects. I'll start to respond to a post, and just as I'm getting ready to hit submit, it kicks me off.

Yeah, it's a good thing you have the backup. Sucks that you lost your cable because of the rain and wind.

After having cable for awhile I thought it was getting kind of slow, but after tonight I thought back and it wasn't this slow. Speaking of random disconnects, I haven't been disconnected from netzero yet. It just pops up every so often if I want to or stay connected.

Yeah, the last 10 times I lost my connection I didn't have a back up and the very last time I got fed up with it and looked up free services. It sucks because I have an ad at the bottom of the screen, but hey it works so I'm happy. If our electric blinks once we'll lose our cable internet connection. That happens to be annoying to. We've had it do that a couple of times.

I have EV1 which, for the most part, isn't bad at all and it's very cheap. It's kinda funny because I'm sitting here thinking I've replied to someone right after they've posted, but actually it's 10 minutes later or whatever. Shows how slow this sucker is.

When it's really stormy outside, I'll have problems staying connected too. It's nice to have connection boosters, otherwise I think we'd all be throwing our computers out the window.

Wow, that is slow! Let me know if Opera speeds up your internet experience a bit. It's a little different at first, but you'll get used to it.

I feel like doing that every time something goes wrong with my computer whether it be online or not. My computer has to work just right or I get mad. I have a bit of a temper when it comes to my computer.

It really is! Sometimes it feels like it's barely crawling. I sure will.

Ya know, I'm actually pretty patient but this monster tries my patience like nothing else. Yeah I hear ya.. my tempter comes out when this sucker starts to mess with me, too.
