So, I just rented and watched the first season. I had never watched this show. I just wasn't interested when it originally came out, but have since changed my mind.
The video store doesn't have anymore seasons, but they are on order. I hate having to wait. I'm still mulling it all over, but I really like this show so far. I'm probably tainted by the TWOP (television without pity) recaps (they hate just about everything about Dawson Leery), but I liked Dawson. They felt he was too self-indulgent, over-analytical, etc. I liked that part. Especially since you could tell Dawson was based on Kevin Williamson (I'm guessing) since he's an artistic type in a small town as was KW. I can relate to that aspect, so I liked that. At this point I want to see Dawson and Joey get together, but I really want to see Joey and Pacey get together later. Which, it's not too difficult to guess, is exactly what will happen in the ensuing seasons. I don't want to get too spoiled on what happens in the future, so I'm doing my best to avoid that, but would love to know what others thought about this show. Last thought, I just love the picturesque town of Capside. Where was it filmed, because it's just gorgeous. Was it filmed on Cape Cod somewhere? |

This certainly was a gem of a show. I watched it from the (originally aired) Pilot episode, through the end of the 4th season. I can't even remember why I stopped watching it. I was watching on and off during the 5th, and then I watched every single week during the 6th season....Dawson was my childhood....It`s one of the all time best, IMO. It`s absolutely in my top 10 shows ever. Yep, the Dawson Leery character was based on Kevin Williamson`s own childhood (the girl best friend with a boy name, lives down the creek, has to take a boat to get to his house, has a crush on him, etc). And of course, he was a young filmaker that was ridiculed along the way to the top. I'm glad you've decided to give the show a shot. You'll love it....Like My So Called Life, before it, Dawson`s Creek really is a coming of age show. There's times when you feel like you know these characters. Like they're your own friends. I don't want to give too much away, but as you saw, the closing moments of the 1st season takes their relationship to a new level. It`s going to be a while before you see any Joey/Pacey stuff, but it will happen before you know it. There's 1 more boyfriend for Joey (in season 2), before her and Pacey realize their feelings for each other (season 2 does see Joey and Pacey become better friends though). The exterior of Capeside was all shot on location in Wilmington, North Carolina. Dawson`s house is still in the same place, as some sort of walk through museum. I really hope to go see it one day....One Tree Hill (another WB drama) took over filming in Wilmington, when Dawson left (much like The WB tried to make OTH fill the gap Dawson left on their network, though that didn't exactly happen, LOL). |

This is so great! I'm excited to have someone to discuss this with!
Wilmington, NC must be a really beautiful place to live. I am so jealous! I don't know what I'll do if I can't get the second season soon. I know TBS shows it at 8am but I am moving soon, so maybe I'll just sign up for DVR services when I make the switch. I've heard a lot of people gripe about the characters for being too analytical or that the vocabulary is too extensive for realistic teen dialogue (so what? and how insulting?) but that's what I loved about the eps I've seen. I really loved the dialogue, that's what drew me in and then I started caring about the characters. I hope the dialogue continues to be as sharp as I get into the other seasons. |

I heard Wilmington is a small/quiet town in North Carolina. I hope you get to watch seasons 2 through 6 soon. They're great. If your video store doesn't get a hold of them soon, you should try and find them on sale....They go on sale for $20 every couple of months (the regular prices are about $35). I loved all the dialogue and references....Maybe the people that made fun of the writing just didn't get it....As a young adult, I do actually find that a little insulting....Obviously, a lot of the Dawson demographic didn't talk like that, but it gave the show it`s own vide/feel. It made it different than other teen dramas, and a lot of other shows in general....Of course the extra~big words were a bit much at times, but it was fun. I literally would smile at some of the stuff they would say (like I do when I watch the Gilmores say 58 words a mintue!)....I wasn't one of those extreme fans that would have the thesaurus (sp?) ready on wednesday nights either.....I just took the show as it was. |

Oh, I was referring to a particular website, and forgot to mention that that was what I was referring to. It's called Television Without Pity. They're known for having been the first to recap DC and the site sort of mushroomed from there. They "get" it, but they don't, if you know what I mean. If you think they don't get it, the recappers will name drop their Ivy League degrees to make sure you know.
Vitriol and snark is sort of their schtick. Which, when done well, is great! But, it's often drivel and just not quality recapping. However, lots of network execs read their stuff (KW did at the time) and the message board attached to it. They are considered the site for network people looking for feedback. Which sickens me, because it's not representative of all viewers. The recappers there, for the most part, are a very self-congratulatory bunch. If their recaps were actually witty instead of redundant, I'd be down for it, no matter how scathing. It's just not the quality snark that they've gotten such credit for. The only reason I go into this is because that site has gotten a rep that doesn't really hold up under examination. It's more pedestrian and less Algonquin Round Table than its reputation would have you believe. |
