Default Season 2!!

I guess Fox really did listen to us, b/c I just got an email from tvshowsondvd.com saying that they're looking into bring season 2 out after all! From what I've heard, though, there won't be as many bonuses as the first season in the hopes that prices won't be so high. I know this is still very much speculation, but I figured I'd pass along this exciting news to fans!

Hey, having the episodes on dvd is better than nothing, right? Let's hope they do decide to release the 2nd season because I'd sure love to have the rest of them released too.

If they do release the second season, I'll be sure to buy it. I own the first season, and it's bugging me that I can't own the rest. I'm the kind of person who wants all or none.

Exactly, at this point it's "Take what you can get." I would be willing to shell out more for bonus material, but this is Fox's decision. It'd still be nice to see more uncut episodes.

I'd rather have uncut dvd quality episodes. TV Networks like to cut out little things, but sometimes those little things can be the funniest thing in the world. For example: When lifetime cut out Rose singing "The Farmer In the Dell" to herself during the final episode I thought that was hilarious. I'm glad they at least decided to show some of the parts they cut out before. I personally like to watch a whole episode uncut because I'm experencing it the way it was suppose to be.

That's how NewsRadio is. The first season is so cut-up in syndication, that I can't watch it. Most of my favorite scenes are cut out. Thankfully, it's being released on DVD next year.

The exact info for Season 2 is as follows, in case anyone is interested:

Hope for Season 2?...

It's been over a year since The Mary Tyler Moore Show - The Complete 1st Season came out on DVD. Despite a fabulous video presentation and extensive extras (see our review by guest writer Jonathan Boudreaux), the sales of Season 1 were vastly underwhelming to Fox's bean-counters. So much so, that plans for a March 2003 Season 2 release were squashed...even though much of the production of that set had already been completed!

Fan speculaton for the first set's failure was centered around low-key marketing that didn't seem to raise consumer awareness, and a price point that seemed too high ($49.98 SRP, resulting in street prices around $35-$45). Another complaint was that supplements were done without the participation of Mary herself, and so fell a bit flat for the money.

Since word about the slow sales of Season 1 was mentioned by Peter Staddon (Fox's Senior Vice President of Marketing) in a Dec. 2002 Home Theater Forum chat, fans have watched and worried as to whether future DVD releases were doomed. Of particular concern was that later seasons contained episodes which they felt were among the very best, including Season 6's classic show "Chuckles Bites The Dust".

Now Mr. Staddon himself brings us new hope that Season 2 might see the light of day after all! Nothing is certain yet, but he says that they are looking into it. This information will soon be found in an upcoming (Nov. 30th) article by Randy Salas, DVD Columnist and Entertainment Wire Editor at the Minneapolis Star Tribune. Salas asked Staddon about The Mary Tyler Moore Show - Season 2 and this was the reply:

"We're looking at ways of bringing that out, so there is hope. We finished it, and there's just a question of can we make it work better than the first season worked."

Salas continued by asking if the "model of presentation" was something being looked at as likely to change, and Staddon replied affirmatively. Salas interprets that to mean that fans shouldn't "expect the same elaborate packaging and wealth of supplements." This would perhaps be done with the goal of getting the price down into the range of Fox's successful-selling DVD sets for M*A*S*H, another classic series from that era.

This is definately a story in development, and we'll be keeping a close eye on it. We don't want to get your hopes up too high just yet, because nothing is firm. But still, this is the best news MTM Show fans have had in a year...and we're pleased to bring it to you. Thanks to Randy Salas for his co-operation with this story. Fans should stay tuned for further updates, whenever they become available.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Me personally, I think that Season 2 will DEFINITELY come out. Why? Because the expense of putting the show on DVD (packaging, making the DVDs, etc.) is NOTHING compared to the process that they go through to restore the episodes, and that work has already been done. Surely they'd want to make back some of that money by selling them, even if it's only to break out even.

I just hope that the lower price means the sales will improve enough to warrant serious thinking of doing more seasons. I want seasons 3 - 7 as well as some of the spin-offs, like RHODA, PHYLLIS and LOU GRANT. I know I'm pushing it, but honestly, when I see some of the crap that gets a DVD release (the ANNA NICOLE SHOW?!!!???), it's a shame that a pinnacle show as the MTMS remains on the shelf. I just hope it has a happy ending. It'd be kind of funny that the DVD release was just as rocky as when the show first started... Ironic, eh?

The only thing that is guaranteed (or *almost* guaranteed) is that Season 2 will be out on DVD, but nothing else. I still think this stinks, however. I want Seasons 3 - 7 as well. Yeah, I know having only 2 seasons is better than what we had a year ago, which was only one season, but still, it angers me that so much crap is out on DVD and MTMS ends up being shelved because its restoration is too costly. So we all have a lot of work ahead of us.

I suggest we start putting our heads together and try to devise ways to get the word out that Season 2 must sell well or no others will be forthcoming.

Me, I'm even prepared to buy extra copies and give them out as birthday presents or next year's Christmas gifts... any means necessary to get as many copies sold and into the public's consciousness. I want this show COMPLETE, as well as (possibly) the spin-offs, like RHODA, PHYLLIS, and LOU GRANT. Yeah, I'm greedy, but hey, so is FOX.

Thanks for posting this Edster. I hope it comes to pass as I, too, hate having an incomplete set.

The excerpt above reflects my thoughts exactly when I first heard that season 2, et al, would not be released. "Low-key marketing" indeed! How about "NO-key"?! (Keyless?) I think I saw ONE stinkin' ad last year (on TVLand) from Fox Video for season 1 -- and that was the DAY BEFORE CHRISTMAS!!!

Once again, TVGen, we seem to be on the same page. I firmly believe that if Fox released Season 2 with the same kind of bonuses as Season 1 had, and promoted it properly, they would make out just fine. But for some reason, the seem to not know how to promote it. JMO. I think that's why Season 1 didn't sell, b/c Fox didn't promote it.

OK, getting down off my soapbox now, LOL. This whole issue really hits a nerve with me.

Uh, not really. If memory serves me, this is what FOX originally had on their site when the first season hit the stands and it's been up there since. They just forgot to take it off their site, that's all.
