***DVD Info*** + a question about an episode... - Sitcoms Online Message Boards

In the episode "Where's Poppa?", Bill Cosby appeared in a CBS Crossover Monday of some kind. He's credited in the write up that accompanies the DVD but is nowhere to be found in the episode and isn't credited at the end of it either. I'm wondering if it was cut or just re-shot with someone else? Problem is, I don't know what his part was supposed to be? Was he a doctor/shrink on his own CBS show? I never really watched it before.

I thought the DVD was to show each episode AS IT AIRED, but I guess here's a case where it isn't. For anyone who might remember it, it's the one where Carrie and Doug pass off Arthur to Danny at his pizza shop so they can have some time alone together. (it's the infamous one where Doug's naked eating pizza while jumping up and down on the couch as you see it from the window with the lampshade covering his privates). I've also seen this one in syndication and there's no Coz in it either. Just curious why Bill's not really in this cut?

Anyway, on to the DVD! If you're a fan, just BUY THIS! Definately want to keep this thing going so we'll get season 2 out there on DVD too! It's actually good for the $30+ that it costs. There's 3 DVDs...

DVD 1 has 11 episodes...

But then you also get 2 BONUS EPISODES, 1 from Season 2 and 1 from Season 3...

--Assaulted Nuts (when Doug shoots the staple gun at work into his groin)
--Better Camera (when Carrie gets a better camera at work than the one Doug gave her for Christmas)

Also on Disc 3, is some features..."Just Having Fun" a behind the scenes look where they talk with the cast about season 1. It's close to a half hour if I recall. There's a "Laughs Montage" that shows some of the season's funniest moments. About 5 minutes there I believe. There's also trailers for a few movies/tv to dvd stuff too on disc 3, but nothing too major there.

I also love that on the Pilot ep. on disc 1, you can select director's commentary and hear Kevin James and Michael Weithorn for the entire 22 minutes as they go through how some things worked, some didn't, why Carrie's sister got the axe, you know, stuff like that. Pretty good, except I'd have liked to have seen a director option on a few more episodes...well, maybe next time! A Gag Reel would have been sweet also, but hey...again, maybe next time.

I can't complain much though, the quality is great on each episode and you get 27 of them. Even though this show really started getting better about half way into this season, it's just worth it to buy it as a fan of the show for the easy access to scenes. You can "skip" from teaser at the start of the program to the start of scene 1, or skip to scene 2 or the tag at the end. Very convenient!

Eventually with the storage capability going up on DVDs, they'll be able to put an entire season on 1 dvd, but not yet. All in all, I'd give it 3 out of 4 stars...maybe even 3.5 as I haven't stopped watching it in two days.

Go get this one!

Just an interesting side note....

There's 3 dvds and we all know who the 3 stars are, so it makes sense that each one would be on one of the dvds. What I thought was odd was the order. Before seeing it I would have guessed that it would be...

DVD 1...Doug
DVD 2...Carrie
DVD 3...Arthur

But as it turns out, Carrie's on the first and Doug on the second which I thought was a little odd. Now I'm not complaining as I love Carrie the most and it's fine with me and even in the Pilot director cut Mike Weithorn says that without her, this show probably never gets far off of the ground. But I just thought that James would get the lead DVD over Remini. I wonder if that's homage to her or if it was fought over?

Thanks for the overview of the DVD. I preordered mine a while back from Amazon.com and am still waiting for it. It sounds like the extras are a little light but I really just wanted the DVD for the show anyway.

Do you mean Leah`s only interview is on disc 1?

Why are they showing episodes from seasons 2 & 3?

Will they be on the other disc`s also?

1) No, I just meant that the PICTURES of the three stars are Remini on the first dvd, James on the second dvd and Stiller on the third dvd. I just thought that was curious as Kevin is the star of the show. By the way, there's really no interviews other than on dvd #3 where there's that 25+ minute piece where they go behind the scenes of season one.

2) They included 1 episode from season 2 and 1 episode from season 3 as BONUS episodes on dvd #3 since there were only 3 shows from season one to put on there to round out their 25 total shows from season one. (remember dvd 1 and 2 have 11 episodes each from season one, leaving only 3 episodes for the last dvd. Hence, the 2 bonus episodes being included to fill it out some.

3) Yes, IF there's a dvd set for season 2 and season 3 they'll still put the staple episode in that set and the camera episode in the other set too. The only question is WILL there be another set? It's planned, but if season 1 totally bombs and doesn't sell well enough to warrent releasing season 2, then we won't get it.

So be sure to go out and buy this one for season one to guarantee a season two set release in a few months! Hell, buy a couple sets and give them out as gifts for Christmas too! I did!

Another note about the dvd. Minus what I said about Cosby not being on that one episode and with another actor probably playing his part at the very end, they all appear to be totally complete as originally aired. It's interesting that each show is about 22 to 22 and a half minutes long on the dvds. BUT if you record them in their syndication run as they're airing on TV right now, they're about 20 and a half to 21 minutes long. They always seem to cut a scene--whether in the beginning teaser section or somewhere in scene 1 or 2--so they can add another minute or so of commercials and make more money on the show in syndication. (all programs that go from network to syndication do this unless they are advertised as UNEDITED in their rebroadcast)

This is all the more reason to get the DVD if you want the COMPLETE episodes. So what are you waiting for? Go out and BUY it NOW!

I bought the DVD today. It's great. I'd never seen the first episode before. And I'd never seen Sarah before. But I imediately recognized her as Emily, Barbara's replacement on "Empty Nest".

I just watched disc 1. The pilot was the best, with commentary.

I was disappointed you can`t shut the laugh track off. That is what makes the MASH dvds the best.

The episode was one of those CBS network line-upsideas in bringing different characters to different shows. Doug came to "Cosby's" show to deliver packages to Hilton. Oh, Cosby portrayed Hilton Lucas, who just retired from his beloved job at the airport doing baggages. Yeah, his character is a FAR cry from Dr. Heathcliff Huxtable but had the same wife and ONE adult-child. His show started to decline due to the passing of Madeline Khan (the dippy-loving Pauline) who was one of the reasons why I watch it. She was extremely funny.

I think thats because the discs are just cut out of one big picture and Doug is in the middle of all the cast pictures with Arthur on one side and Carrie on the other so since he's in the middle, he's on disc 2 and Carrie's on Disc 1 and Arthur on 3 because thats the order of the basic picture.
