"Goodbye, Farewell, Amen" is the textbook example of the perfect series finale.

Cool

I loved that ep. Im really happy FX showed the heck out of it the past couple years so I could tape it. Before that, I think it was on local channel 4 about 10 years ago as a sunday movie.

Since you didn't elaborate, did you like the show at all, or was it just the movie that whizzed you off?

well, I don't agree. It had some ok parts but only a few. Like the opening scences between Hwkeye & Sidney, the scene where Hawkeye breaks down in front of Sidney, the part where Charles sees the tank drive into the latrine, Charles comments at the farewell dinner, and parts of the goodbye scene, like when Hawkeye looks down & sees "GOODBYE" spelled out in stones by B.J.
Trivia: the fire they had was put in because there really WAS a fire that burned down the outdoor set.

By the time I saw the finale I'd ceased to care that much, which is why my personal opinion of the episode is lower than it might otherwise have been. I didn't like BJ anymore by then, I'd never liked Potter, and I didn't really like Hawk so much anymore either! It wasn't the show I'd originally started watching.

However, it was well handled. They didn't lay the sentiment on too thick, as many shows would have done. There was a fine sense of relief tempered with regret - "I'm going home! But I'm leaving my friends."

In order to have been a good farewell episode for me, though, it would have had to have been earlier in the show's run. Frank and Hotlips being parted at the height of their relationship - maybe Frank finally deciding that it was her and not his wife that he wanted. Hawk and Trap saying goodbye, although having been friends from before the war presumably they'd have seen each other afterwards. Henry getting to go home to the baby he had never seen. That would have been a finale worth seeing!

I think the success of the last episode in the ratings is due to the cast's desire to quit the show before it was going to go downhill and be swiped off the lineup from the networks. The cast decided it would be the final season. Anyone disagree?

According to Executive Prodcer Burt Metcalfe in "The Complete Book Of M*A*S*H," the cast "knew they were coming to the end by Year Ten. CBS kept asking us if we wanted to continue...It was decided that Year Eleven would be the last year."

Even after ten seasons, "M*A*S*H" was still a top ten show. CBS would have wanted them to continue forever if they were still in the top ten. I think the cast and wrters had finally run out of steam.

I remember reading somewhere when "After MASH" (not M*A*S*H-Hollywood added the astericks to the title) that in the middle of the 10th season, they took a vote among the cast as to whether or not they wanted to do an 11th season, and half of them did, and half didn't. So the 11th season was only a half-season.

BTW-if you never saw "After M*A*S*H" , that's ok. It was so bad, you wouldn't want to see it!

That last episode made me cry and I was so depressed and couldn't think staight for days--sometimes I wish they left us hanging-Idonno, I find my imagination better for making up stuff like that and what may have happened than knowing a set, certain thing. More fan fiction too.
