I think stations should play a lot of songs that weren't singles. Take my favorite oldies station, for instance. They seem to focus on playing the songs that were hit singles in their time. Like The Beatles. They almost always play the songs that were #1 and they rarely play others. I need some variety. I like "She Loves You", "I Want to Hold Your Hand", among other #1 hits but they don't play the songs that were sort of obscure. By obscure I mean songs like "Helter Skelter", "I Am the Walrus", "Blackbird", "The Mean Mr. Mustard", "Drive My Car", "Lovely Rita", "Back in the USSR." I'm starting to tire of repetitiveness and hearing the same song every few days. I want to hear more from the Temptations other than "My Girl" (Which tends to be overplayed here in SD).

Oh man- wayyyy too many to list. It'd be easier to list the songs radio oughta cut down on playing.
When I djed at a rock radio station (overnights), I used to *always* "cheat" & play stuff not on the log. We called those "deep cuts". Great (& sadly ignored) songs off great albums by great artists. A few brave stations out there do this a lot, but I think most don't. Anyway, here's a very partial list: CUT DOWN ON Queen's -Bohemian Rhapsody, We Will Rock You/Champions (I love em, but DAYum! You'd think Queen only wrote 4 songs) TRY PLAYING- Sheer Heart Attack, Brighton Rock, Doing All Right CUT DOWN ON Zeppelin's Stairway to Heaven, Whole Lotta Love, Immigrant Song, D'yer Mak'er TRY PLAYING- The Song Remains The Same, When The Levee Breaks, 4 Sticks, Achilles Last Stand CUT DOWN ON Aerosmith's Walk This Way, Sweet Emotion, any of their sappy mid 80s to late 90s output. eg: 'Crazy', 'Angel' & any of those movie soundtrack songs etc TRY PLAYING- Draw The Line, Monkey On My Back, Seasons of Wither CUT DOWN ON Pink Floyd's Hey You, Comfortably Numb, Money, Time, The Wall (main theme), Have a Cigar, Wish You Were Here TRY PLAYING- Anything off 'Animals', & anything else off 'Wish You Were Here', be cool to hear some of the early work too CUT DOWN ON The Who's Baba O'Riley, Won't Get Fooled Again, Pinball Wizard ('Who's Next' is an all round classic album, so they oughta play pretty much anything else on it) CUT DOWN ON Yes' Owner of a Lonely Heart, Roundabout, All Good People (Great songs, but sheesh!) TRY PLAYING- Oh man- don't get me started. LONG list for them. Pretty much anything else off any of their dozens of albums. ![]() I'm sure you can add tons more to this...

I wish bands like The Jayhawks, Wilco, and a great artist like Joe Henry would get some airplay. Their music is amazing.

I wish they would stop playing The Clashes "Rock the Casbah" and play "Train in Vain" or "London Calling".
Play more Stone Roses! Play more India Arie and Jill Scott! Its really a shame that more radio stations don't go outside the mainstream numbers any more. Like a station here in the L.A. area when I was growing up used to play all kinds of songs that no one else would play, but that doesn't exist anymore, its all about making a buck. |

An excellent question. It's all about numbers, unfortunately. Everything is very carefully calculated & plotted by the station owners & music programmers & test audiences. The goal is to appeal to the maximum number of listeners as humanly possible. So the "solution" is to play the same 10, most familiar songs to the average listener. If a major rock station had to choose between playing The Eagles' "Hotel California" vs. "In The City", for ex., take a big, fat guess which they'll air... I've been tempted to post an amazing article that Rolling Stone did titled "Why Radio Sucks". It explains everything. It's a single page worth but I was afraid people woulda still found it too long to read. (like this post of mine) ![]() I had fun when I did radio, but I totally got into it too late. Everytime I read stories about how radio *was* in the 60s, I get so jealous. Back then the djs played what they wanted, when they wanted. Wayyy more variety. The djs have nuttin' to do with it today... I will write this from the article- the last good independent radio stations. Anyone here know these?- WBEB (B101)- Philadelphia WXRC (95.7)-Charlotte, NC WOXY (97X)- Cincinnati KBZT (94.9)- San Diego |

Anything from Iron Maiden, Blind Guardian, Iced Earth, Symphony X, or any other metal/rock band that doesn't get the attention they deserve.
