If John Goodman hadn't all-but left the series during the ninth season, do you think it would have been as bad as it was? Would they have gone with the whole ridiculous "lottery" scenario, or would they have focused on something more down-to-earth?

Who really knows. I think they would have still done that whole horrible lottery deal. But I don't think they would have done the Dan affair. Which I wish they wouldn't have.
They should have ended in the 8th season. They could have been in the top 20 their whole run. |

I think the 8th season was a huge disappointment and they had to do a ninth season. If they would have ended it with 8, the show would have went out with a wimper. I don't like the entire 9th season, but it was fascinating to watch a show impolde on itself like "Roseanne" did. For the overall quality of the series, ending at 8 would have been smart, but to go out in a blaze of hellfire, which was always "Roseanne"s away, was only fitting for the series.
Also, had the series ended at 8, I don't think it would be as memorable as it is. What is talked about more now, anyway? The glorious run the series had or that last season which flipped everything upside down? The last season, like it or not. |

I didn't know that John Goodman phoned in his appearances in the final season. Why was that?

I remember hearing that JG didn't even want to do the final season, but as a thank you to the show, he decided to stay on for a few episodes. Alot of it had to do with Roseanne's huge temper tantrum in season 8, which really seemed to be the last straw for Goodman

Normally when people bash the last season I just either keep my mouth shut or say something timid to defend it but I'm fed up. You people like to b*tch and complain about it and speculate what would have happened if something were different. What does it matter? The last season had some memorable, funny moments along with some bad ones. I don't particularily like season 5 but I'm not constantly bringing up what I didn't like about it and what should have been changed. I understand everyone is intitled to their opinions and this is a board about Roseanne (both good and bad) but please, if you love the show as much as I do, stop bringing it down with your constant complaint for one season and enjoy and celebrate the ones you did like.

There's plenty of praise heaped upon the show on these boards, but people will talk about the negatives of the show as well, and they have every right to do so. This isn't a tribute board. Honestly, no offense, but if you can't handle reading posts from members expressing their opinions on the last season, perhaps you should refrain from reading those posts. If we're going to autopsy a show on a daily basis, the unpleasant parts have to be examined too. You certainly can't expect people to stop discussing something because it upsets you. |

During the filming of the 1995 Halloween episode(where Roseanne gives birth) She had a HUGE tantrum due to some of the bosses(like Executive Producer Eric Gilliand) she told the show's producers to either fire him or she goes, well, they didn't fire him, but she didn't leave either. At the end of the 8th season, he was either fired or left the show. From what I hear, John Goodman's contract ran out at the end of the 8th season and he didn't want to come back for the 9th season.

Well, it obviously matters to those who are discussing it and to AKA, who created the thread. I don't call it bitching and complaining. I call it discussion in an open forum. You did say that people are entitled to their opinions but followed that with....."but please, if you love the show as much as I do, stop bringing it down with your constant complaint for one season and enjoy and celebrate the ones you did like." You said you were "fed up" and decided to "defend" the last season. It still sounds to me that you are having difficulty handling negative opinions on the last season. There are lots of redundant topics discussed all over SitcomsOnline all the time. This one, in particular, obviously gets under your skin, as evidenced in your original post which clearly sounded like an admonishment. Roseanne is still new to Nick@Nite, so there's a renewed interest in the show. The topics aren't redundant to me or the other newcomers to the show or this board. Personally, Roseanne is new to me, so I want to know everything about the show, both positive and negative. If the show stumbled, fumbled or tumbled in the final season, I want to know why. The only way to find out the deal is to read these boards. |

I don't see what is wrong if us fans of the show criticize the last season... It's a fan club, we are not supposed to like every second of every episode, there are plenty of episodes I don't like, but I still watch the show everyday.

The first 7 seasons were great. The 8th was ok but the last one I have a hard time watching. Even if JG had stayed I don't know if it would have been better. I didn't like the whole lottery bit and I also didn't like how they had Dan cheat on Roseanne. The last episode made the whole show a frigment of Roseannes imagination and I prefer just to watch the show up to Darlene and David's wedding.

I know one thing--I would have no interest in watching Roseanne without John Goodman. I can't even imagine it.
In my opinion, he's every bit as important to the show as Roseanne herself. |

John still managed to squeeze out appearances in thirteen episodes during the final season.
