(CNN) -- Art Carney, who paired with Jackie Gleason in the classic series "The Honeymooners" and won an Oscar for his role as an retired teacher traveling through America in the 1974 film "Harry and Tonto," has died. He was 85.

Carney passed away Sunday at his home in Connecticut, according to a spokesman for a Connecticut funeral home, and was buried in a private ceremony Tuesday.

"The family is very private, and that's why no one was notified until after the funeral," said Philip Appell, a spokesman for Swan Funeral Home in Clinton, Connecticut.

Though he appeared in more than 25 films -- and created the role of Felix Unger in the original Broadway version of "The Odd Couple" -- Carney, a veteran of the World War II invasion of Normandy, became famous playing sewer worker Ed Norton, Jackie Gleason's foil on the 1950s television comedy "The Honeymooners."

With Gleason, who played the blustery bus driver Ralph Kramden, the two embarked on get-rich-quick schemes and other tomfoolery in an effort to get ahead in life. Their wives -- Norton's wife Trixie (Joyce Randolph) and Ralph's wife Alice (Audrey Meadows) -- were endlessly patient with their husbands.

The role earned Carney three consecutive Emmy awards.

Default RIP Art Carney

Art Carney was one of TV's best sidekicks. He had great chemistry with Jackie Gleason on The Honeymooners. He may be gone but some of his famous lines live on in reruns:

"Hey there Ralphie boy!"
"Va-va-va-vooom!"
"Lulu!"
"Don't touch me, I'm sterile."

I also remember the scene when Ralph recorded an apology to Alice and when he was done, Norton came in and burst into tears.

I just loved Art Carney. Ed Norton was one of my favorite characters of all time. Jackie Gleason was rightfully considered a comic genius, but without Carney, I don't believe that "The Honeymooners" would have been as successful or as enduring as its become over the years. These are my favorite Norton/Carney moments:

-----When he tries to teach Ralph how to play golf and he tries to demonstrate the proper method of addressing the ball. He bends over, looks at the ball, and says, "Hello ball!".

----When Ralph has to appear on a TV quiz show and he needs Norton to help him study. Ralph is trying to see how many popular songs he can identify so he makes Norton sit at the piano and play different songs to see if he can guess them correctly. But before every song, Norton keeps playing "Swanee River" which he says he needs to play in order to warm up. Ralph is livid and soon kicks him out of his house, as usual. When he appears on TV, naturally the studio band breaks into "Swanee River" and Ralph has to guess who wrote it. He weakly mentions Ed Norton and loses his chance at the big prize.

---Whenever Norton has to sign something, he takes a pen and, with great flourish, he starts waving his arms in about 50 different directions and only begins to sign after Ralph can't take it anymore and starts yelling at him. I do the same thing myself whenever I have to sign a cheque and I usually get the same reaction from my parents, who have slightly less patience than Gleason himself. After I finally sign it, I laugh softly to myself and start to think that somewhere Art Carney would be proud of what I did. I can think of no finer tribute to a great man and a wonderful comedian. I will miss him dearly.

He said in an interview that he got that from his dad, who really did that before he would write something. I did it once as a joke a couple years ago, and have been doing it ever since. And just last night, I told my friend and his girlfriend at the bowling alley, that I was going home to watch The Honeymooners. I was so close to doing my Ed Norton impression, but I'm not sure my friends have ever seen the show, and they would just think I was weird.

Even Jackie Gleason, The Great One, knew how important Art Carney was to The Honeymooners. I believe he once said that if Art wasn't there, he wouldn't do The Honeymooners sketches. Art simply could not just be replaced by another actor.

Even though he hadn't done any acting in a while (to my knowledge anyways) just knowing that he's not around anymore is hard to deal with. Each time I'd watch the show, I'd always say to myself that I should write him and tell him what a great job he did. But I never did.

Oh, I just remembered, Art Carney played a Bat-Villain. I believe his name was The Archer.

Goodbye, Art. Thanks for making me laugh.

Though my heart is filled with sadness at the loss of one more of my childhood heroes, I am cheered by the realization that our friend Art is up in Heaven, reunited with Jackie and Audrey, and trading notes with Daws Butler and Mel Blanc, both of whom did characters based on his Ed Norton.

So long, pal, indeed....

So sorry to hear about him. Sending out our condolences. I watched the Honeymooners as a young kid way back when & enjoyed the TVLAND re-runs. Peace & God Bless...
