Now that CBS, NBC and ABC have celebrated their birthdays ( did FOX air such a special when they turned 15 ? ) Several local stations are hitting milestones too in their own right, if they have not already.
For example ,Several of the local Denver stations are turning 50 this year. Denver's WB2 put together a 30 minute special celebrating the event. Lots of video clips from the 50s and 60s including a clip of the oldest surviving film of early Colorado tv. The Fred & Fae show from 1953 ( a comedy show for teens ). The whole special aired on a Sunday morning and lasted 30 minutes. A friend of mine who goes to Virginia's James Madison University told me their local station, WHSV ABC3's 50th, their recent retro special lasted four full hours. How they in their early days were able to "pick and choose" from CBS, NBC, ABC and even Dumont and were able to re-broadcast them to local viewers. I have seen Washington DC's WTTG chanel 5's 40th ( just before they went FOX in 1985 ), hosted by then local news anchor Maury Povich ( years before he start doing the "whose the father of my baby " shows ). Very well done, lots of clips of local shows. I also have seen Baltimore's WBAL-TV channel 11's 50th. A lot of the show was pretty much a brag-a-thon for channel 11 and Baltimore in general. WBAL does hold the honor of being the local station that is used more often in movies. It does seem whenever a show is filmed in and around Baltimore, WBAL does for some reason manage to get in there most of the time. Are any of your local channels turning 50 ( or older ) this year? What are they planning to do? How was their "look back"? |

My local CBS (WJHL in Johnson City, TN) turned 50 this year. They aired a rather boring documentary last month about the history of the station. It included mostly interviews with monotone people who have worked at the station over the years, no clips whatsoever, and only a handful of still photographs.

KHQ, my local NBC afiliate, turned fifty last year and they had an hourlong special to commemorate the milestone. KXLY, our ABC station, turned fifty this year, but no special yet.

WTVM(the ABC station out of Columbus, GA) turned 50 a couple of months ago... they did a week long segment during the 6pm news with retrospectives of major news events(world and local) that had happened since they had been on the air. They showed weather events and sports events as well as Bloopers and past anchors.
