Question Would you let your kids watch Roseanne?

For those of you who have children, do you let them watch Roseanne? And to those who don't have children, if you did, would you let them watch? If I had kids, I think I would maybe let them watch some of the less risque episodes from the first few seasons, because I think many of them had good messages. But I definitely wouldn't let them watch the more controversial ones that aired in the middle, and later seasons. One episode I definitely wouldn't let them watch is the pot smoking one (I forget the name) that aired in the 7th, or 8th season I believe. Also I doubt I'd let them watch the masturbation episode. Watching that with them would be way too uncomfortable for me. How do you guys feel about this? Is Roseanne an acceptable show for kids to be watching, or not? What age do you think is appropriate for kids to start watch at? Please share your thoughts.

I dont have kids but if I did I would let them watch Roseanne (all episodes). I watched it with my mom when it first aired and I turned out fine.

My parents didn't seem to think it was a good idea for me and my siblings to watch it. I think if I have kids someday they'd have to be at least 11 or 12 before I'd let them watch some of the more questionable episodes. I personally don't have a problem with the masturbation or pot smoking ones. I wouldn't care if my kids watched that. The pot one is like the pot (hehe) calling the kettle black, and sends a good message I think. Pot smoking is too demonized anyway I think, and I DON'T smoke it either, so don't think by that admission that I'm pro-smoking. But everyone is welcome to their own opinions, we all have different values.

I would let my children if I had any. Just because I was a kid when Roseanne was on. It ended when I was 13 I beleive. and I can still remember earlier episodes too. and I turned out fine.

Hopefully my question didn't come off like I think any kid who watches this show turns out bad. By no means was that my reason for posting this. I too grew up with the show, and have watched for as long as I can remember, and I think I turned out pretty okay for the most part. I just don't think I'd be able to sit there with my 7, or 8 year old kid, and with a good conscience watch an episode with them about masturbation, or about peeping on your 80 year old next door neighbors. I'd probably just wait until my kids were around 13, or 14 before I started letting them have more freedom to make their own viewing decisions. I think age, and maturity is the main issue. I'd just want to wait until they were mature enough I guess.

I would watch it with my kids(at least til their 12 or 13) then they can watch it on their own... That way, you can mute the TV or turn the channel when a scene comes on you don't want them to see.

I don't have kids yet but if I did I would let them watch it because if you shelter your kids too much they will go wild when they get older. Your kids are going to learn about masturbation and other things anyway why not let them learn it with a little humor. That way they don't have to feel akward when all there friends are talking about it and they have no idea what's going on.

Just my two cents.

I'm not so sure. If I had kids, I would limit their television viewing to begin with, so I don't think Roseanne would make the cut.
I don't think it's always appropriate for preteens.
As much as I love the show myself, I wouldn't watch it with my young children.

I would let my older children watch without my being there to monitor the direction the show takes, but with the younger ones I would have to monitor the shows I let them watch.
I would let them watch the pot smoking one with my supervision so they could see how it supposedly affected the characters, but the masterbation one I would not let my younger kids watch. I dont think they are old enough to explain that to just yet (they are 4 and 5), and I dont think I would let them watch the one with the kiss from Hemmingway.

***No I am not homophobic I just wouldnt want to explain to my little ones about opposite or same sex situations and confuse them about relationships altogether***

When my little ones reach 8 or 9 I would then let them watch all the episodes as long as I was there to make sure they did not get confused about the topic or if the had any questions especially about masterbation

I dont know if I agree that not letting your kids watch a tv show is sheltering them. I have 3 grown kids that I monitored what they watched and turned many shows off that they wanted to watch. And they turned out find. I chose to talk to my kids about drugs, sex, masterbation on my own and not use a tv show to teach them. IF you teach your children they are not sheltered.

Would you rather your children learn from friends that saw it on TV and got the wrong impression and idea or from you? I am not sure where you grew up but not many 6 and 7 year olds go around talking about masterbation. FYI take it from someone with 5 children ranging from 17 to 5 and sheltering them is letting them grow up learning from others and not you. And a child turning wild a lot of that comes from within not what you watch on TV. Raise'em right and teach them well and they will do okay in the end.

Sorry I am a mother, just had to have my say, I am not coming down on anyone's opinion.

Very true Adam... The pot episode showed what would happen to you if you smoked pot(remember Roseanne smashing the egg with a pan). They were very serious issues and Roseanne didn't encourage them, but rather showed you the consequences if you do it.

I agree that if you teach your kids they aren't completely sheltered but if you hide them from everything you find offensive then you are sheltering them.

My mother monitored my TV viewing for a long time until she realized that I was a person and could deal with complex issues and ask her questions. When you let your kids watch shows like Roseanne you open a door to conversation.

Not letting your kid watch what you don't like isn't right. Your kid is a person, not just a minature you. Just because you can't handle a episode on masturbastion doesn't mean they can't.

(P.S. I am not talking about 5 year olds here...7,8, or 9 year olds. Besides I don't think any kid younger than that even wants to watch Roseanne.)

I went to the gay and lesbian mardi gras with my parents when I was nine months old for the first time and we kept going until I was five. I didnt turn out odd. Unlike my friends who are homophobic. I would let my children watch all episodes
