If Wilbur could only have Carol or Mr. Ed...who do you think he woud pick? As I watch this show, I have thought more than once about who Wilbur seemed to love more.
Remember the episode where Ed got a new saddle? He ordered it himself, but Wilbur was going to let him keep it just as long as Ed wouldn't use it until after some ball that Carol wanted a new evening gown for. Wilbur told Carol no on the dress but let Ed keep his saddle. (Of course Ed ends up destroying it by accident out of spite and Carol ends up with a new gown) I think Wilbur loved Ed more. |

This is a hard question to answer. Because it was a 1960's TV sitcom, of course Wilbur would have chosen his wife. But I honestly think he would be happier with Mister Ed. I mean Carol got so annoying at times. She almost never stuck by his side. It's obvious that Wilbur thinks of Ed as a son. Since Carol doesn't know Mister Ed can talk, she doesn't understand why Wilbur loves Ed so much and spends most of his time with him.
To sum it up, I'd vote for Wilbur and Mister Ed. Wilbur can always remarry. But he can never get another talking horse.

Well if you have a talking horse that is a pretty amazing thing. No wonder he spent more time with Ed then Carol. However since Carol did not know that Ed could talk, I don't blame her for being a bit annoyed. It made for a good sitcom. I noticed Wilbur never really ever got mad at Carol. Almost whatever she wanted, he let her have, or if she was upset or annoyed he tried to fix it. Wilbur did not like to see people upset.

One more thing I like to add is Mr Ed has a big heart and in the Hawaii episode when he thought he was breaking up Wilbur and Carol's marriage he was willing to stay in Hawaii. So if it had ever came down to Wilbur having to choose I think deep down Mr Ed would force Wilbur to choose Carol.

Good point, Ed would have probably ran away (again) to keep them from breaking up. He did this in the episode when Zsa Zsa wanted to buy him. He decided to go with her to Australia just so Wilbur could have the $5000 for Carol's new fur coat.

Maybe things would be different if Carol wore a saddle...

I think Wilbur loved his wife more than Mister Ed. He loved them both, but a love for one's spouse is deeper than a love for their animal. Wilbur no doubt loved Ed, but if forced to choose, I think he would stay with Carol.
The show's focus is on the relationship between Wilbur and Ed, but the glimpses we see of his home life with Carol, it is clear that they have a happy marriage. |

In, Ed The Artist, after he paints that horrible painting of Carol, and she thinks Wilbur painted it, she sends him packing to sleep in the barn.
Ed asks Wilbur who he loves more, him or Carol, and he tells Ed that it's Carol. I think it's just different kinds of love. |

He was also funny and loving, and was worth the trouble. Wilbur had his hands full trying to keep in balance his often neglected wife and his emotionally high-maintenance horse. I think Wilbur and Carol's marriage was more than okay. Since the show was centered on Wilbur and Ed, it appears Wilbur enjoys him more than Carol. If they gave Wilbur more airtime with Carol, we would think they were closer. From what we are shown, it's evident that they're happily married. I think the writers intentionally showed us that by the affection exchanged between the couple. |

I think it's great that Wilbur wasn't put in a position of making a choice. He needed someone he could talk about guy stuff with--Addison was too prissy and Col. Kirkwood was too pompous. But Ed was a regular guy. He never tried to make Wilbur make a choice. The way I see it, Wilbur loved both Carol and Ed in different ways.

Wilbur had two demanding blondes in his life, and he seemed to spend more time with the one with the deep voice.
