I was just thinking of one of their songs today & I gotta run home to listen to it. ("Father O.S.A")
I'd strongly recommend getting hold of their early work. (around the time of "Lady") Like, 1972. Years before 'Come Sail Away' & the other hits. It's great stuff! If you can find "Serpent Is Rising", "Styx" &/or 'Styx II' grab em!

I have that one too! Nice staring point for them, but the actual albums have so many great (& usually radio-ignored) songs. I love Styx!

Depending on what songs on the hits album appeal to you most, I can throw some suggestions your way of other bands with a similar sound & feel.

Both Styx & Kansas pretty much learned their chops from listening to Yes & English bands like them. Kansas are kinda like a "down home" Yes w/ a violin thrown in. But w/ Yes & Kansas, you'll get the big, grandiose 'prog rock' sound, complete w/ the pipe (Hammond) organs, pretty multi-vocal harmonies (kinda like Queen), very listener-friendly melodies & lotsa straight on rock thrown in!

My dad has an incredible Album and Cd collection. I started getting over pop culture at 13 when I got into the beatles. Then I saw the OLD mountain Dew commercial that goes:

I see a little silohuetto of a man
Mountain Dew
Mountain Dew
will you do the fandango?

lol anyways so I started singing it around the house and my dad's like "YOu know Queen?" lol and I thought "of england?". So he made me listen to the actual bohemian rhapsody. I was instantly addicted and have since then slowly worked my way through his huge (over 500 cds and over 100 albums from the 70s and early 80s) I listen to styx all the time, and when he told me that there was going to be a concert I manage to make a deal with him to pay half of mine (i'd pay the rest) and convince my friend (who loves styx) to come with me.

That's so funny that you said "Yes" and "kansas", because my dad has been trying to get me into both yes and kansas but I haven't given them a chance. He specifically said that they if I loved Queen and supertramp I'd love those two bands. I guess it goes to show that Dad's are always right.

and yes i'm probably one of the few kids my age at least in my school who love all these bands. and in the words of jack black "a little something called MTV killed the music"

Well your Dad & Jack Black are absolutely right! Lol! Ohhh my- Don't get me going on MTV again. I've ranted about *those* clowns on this board a few times now.
It's up to teens like yourself & Hannah Lee to stick up for the classics. I think the very fact that so many classic rock songs have been remade, sampled & covered in the last XX years (not to mention being used all over tv commercials, movie trailers & rediscovered by lots of people your age) shows their lasting power.

Nothing feels better than making a great new musical discovery. And to think you had (have) all those gems just sitting there waiting to be heard. You have lots more listening to do, but that's part of the fun!

My guess is if it's your dad's records & cds you're rummaging through, he has Kansas' actual albums. In which case, you oughta hear Point of Know Return &/or Leftoverture. Also, if 80s Styx (ex. "Mr. Roboto") appeals to you, then Yes' 90125 album might be more your speed. (although 'The Yes Album' is still one of their 3 must-haves)

I'd be *very* curious to hear what you've found & what you thought! Update me, will you?
