I think Pearl Jam is the best band of the three. I believe they have the best songs, as well as the best lyrics. Nirvana was good too, although I was never a huge fan of theirs. As far as SoundGarden goes, I was never really able to get into their music. I think their songs lack the emotional impact of the other two bands. What do you guys think?

I love all three the same, but I'm going to have to go with Pearl Jam. Maybe I'd vote differently if Nirvana was still around.
MODS: I accidentally clicked "Nirvana," but I meant "Pearl Jam." Is there any way to change my vote? |

I love all 3 of them....but I'm such a big Nirvana fan, there's no way I'm not gonna vote for them. They are my ultimate favorite. That whole era of music was pretty much great, altogether, though.

Most Seattle bands in the 90's did not care for the term "grunge", it was more of a media term to describe all the lo-fi, garage-rock sounding bands who wore flannel and were predominantly from Seattle (being from Seattle was a big requirement). Grunge basically had elements of metal, psychedelia, and punk in it. It was a reaction against the over-polished sound of late-80's metal (the "big-hair bands). In discussing the grunge scene, don't forget bands like Mudhoney, Green River, Mother Love Bone, Buzz Factory, and the Melvins. When I think of grunge, I definitely think of Mudhoney: "Touch Me, I'm Sick," "This Gift", "Slidin' In and Out of Grace", "Into the Drink", etc.
The other thing was that everyone was under the assumption that all the above bands sounded the same. There were many things they had in common, but ultimately, Nirvana, Pearl Jam, and Soudgarden were entirely different. Alice in Chains were also popular from Seattle at that time, but they never got really tagged as a grunge band. |

Soundgarden. I saw them in 1990. They seemed to define the murky Seattle sound best.
