Red face Virginity Issue In Effect!

I just remembered last night that in The Facts Of Love episodes, it deals with virginity and sex-related topics. Why won't they air The First Time?

The Facts of Love eposide teaches you about sex and how not to be afaid of your body. There are a lot of parents who arent' quite sure how to bring up the subject on the birds and the bees, and if kids watch this eposide with there parents it might help parents be more at ease to talk to there kids about the subject.

First time - gives young people the idea that it's ok to go out and have sex at a young age. There are a lot of young people watching this show, and the people at Nick At Night proberly feel that since First time actually deals with people having sex it isnt' really approiate for younger viewers to watch. Facts of love eposide doesn't say go out and have sex it teaches you that it's ok to wait.

See, that pisses me off.... It isn't such a young age. Nat was what, 20 or something when that episode was taking place? Given the younger age of many of our posters, I don't want to get into a whole moral battle about this, but I'll tell you what - looking back on my college years, 20 wasn't so young.

Off my soapbox now.

I completely agree coily. In college the way it is now, 20 is pretty late, believe me. It doesn't make it any more right or wrong, but they need to realize that it's not as big a deal as they think it is (the episode, that is) She was practically an adult, so it should not be such a huge controversial issue because it happens every day.

It's kinda like the TC thing. They'll show the ep with cocaine but they won't show the FOL ep 'Dope.' It doesn't make sense to me.

Facts of life isn't the only show they will not air episodes on that deal with drugs, i guess there is a brady bunch (maybe not) episode with drugs, and there is a lavern and shirly one they won't show, and a happy days one they didn't show, so it's not just facts of life, i think they might have aired te TC one cuz it wasn't REAL drugs where they were tempted to DO drugs tehy just had it.. and they didnt' do drugs either.. cuz i know the dope episode sue ann DOES do drugs and she gets high off of them, and i know in the lavern and shirly episode lavern and shirly both try the drugs (i think) along with the happy days one.. but hey, i wouldn't want episdoes about kids doing drugs available for my kids (if i had any) to see that trying drugs is ok.. ya know? so i think nick at nite knows what they are doing!

I firmly believe that censorship is wrong. Whether that institution is a school or a cable network they do not have a right to make a decision that should be made by parents. If my Mom was to decide I could not watch "The First Time" until I was old enough to understand the issues that is their perogative, but not N@N's perogative. I watch soaps which to my dismay are becoming more and more focused on pulling in the teen audience and know enough about the nightime shows that are geared for teens (do not watch them) that the issues N@N finds controversal are the norm for those shows. Soaps air opposite of Nick's "kid-centered" line-up. I actually find it harmful that N@N shies away from these topics because you are not solving anything. If a person is educated then they can determine what they feel is right and what is wrong. Education is the key. I remember the Cosby episode where they find the joint in Theo's book. After watching that episode my Mom and I discussed the issues involved. I think I was around 10, but my Mom decided it was better to educate me then to ignore the issue or not let me watch the episode.

TVAddict and coily- I'm a junior and completely agree with you about the current college environment and attitude towards sex.

Dammit, I just can't leave well enough alone. I'm giving my opinion once again...

OK, I think the major difference between TC and FOL drug/sex related topics is the demographic those shows are shooting for. FOL always has and always will get a younger audience than TC. And thanks to the happy-anti-peer-pressure-Nancy-Reagan-Just-Say-No-I-learned-it-from-watching-you-80's, it's assumed that you cannot make a choice on your own without trying to emulate a character on TV.

Furthermore, as a child of the 80's, let me tell you this - the 80's were not as clean-cut as TV would have you believe....

AAAAAAAAaaaaargh! I hate it when it is assumed that teens are incapable of making a decision that would vary from a fiction character.

OK... I'm better now... I need a drink after this post

Being a sophmore in high school, 20 is kinda old, but absolutely nothing is wrong with waiting till then. The first part of that sentence was'nt totally my opinion, by the way. It's more of my peers point of view...

Still, kids see worse stuff on the news then ANYTHING that would be shown on FOL. And it's not like we can't deal with that.
N@N should'nt have to take responsbility for what a small percentage of what their audience 'can't' see. That's the parent's problem.
And too bad for some of you who's parents are too uptight and in denial that they're child is growing up...
Sorry, kinda blew up there at the end...

Someone referred to Nick airing a TC episode about cocaine. Which episode was it? I don't remember any episode with that topic. I like both FOL & TC so I'm not trying to irritate anyone.

I can honestly say I wouldn't have based my decision on whether or not to have sex at a young age on the actions of Natalie from "The Facts of Life". I'm really surprised N@N is using this reasoning to hold back episodes.
I've been looking for the "Dope" episode since last fall (Helen Hunt guest stars!) and just thought I kept missing it. I remember the "Laverne & Shirley" episode where they ate marijuana brownies, but it's from the Hollywood era, so I don't miss it. They won't show these drug-related episodes, but they will show the episode of "Three's Company" where Jack shows his scrotum <g>. Go figure.

I don't precisely remember what season "The Facts of Love" episode was from. Anybody know?
