Question Question

Were there any episodes where Elaine and Jerry were a couple?I'm embarrassed to say that I haven't seen every episode. I'm sort of a "new" fan.

In the early episodes they were kind of awkward talking about other love interests around each other, even though they were not together. In the Deal (season 2) they got together again as a couple. I am not sure if they ever said why they broke up again after that episode.

Why did they break up? At the end they were together I thought.

No, they were not a couple during the series (sans The Deal).

Elaine was brought in on epi, as a built in, but still friendly X.
It's implied that they made better friends than lovers.
Basically, after the pilot (Good News, Bad News, the writters felt they needed to introduce a female character.

Just like the age old Newman grudge, [as Brian mentions] it's never precisely explained but all happened before the beginning of the series.

Elaine says her & Jer consumated their courtship 37 times, and Jer says 25. With those 2 [prob pretty 'active'] that could have put them together for only a short time, say a month (or a couple), so it's like they tried it (the relationship), & then went back to being friends.

sinatrastar mentioned The Deal. That's a GREAT epi!

Elaine, that's cool you have plenty fresh ones to watch.... watch The Deal when you can

The Deal <=read 1st scene
It's from season 2 and it's episode #14.

Jer & Elaine are on the couch, see naked peeps on the tube & strike The Deal, a way to enjoy sex yet preserve the friendship.
"The "this" would be good" (picture the hand montions)

Hey, it was worth a try

It is from season 2, so it lacks the 'pace' of the newer episodes.

Here's some dialog from a fairly early ep (season 3 The Pez Dispenser #31) that let's us know they were, but are no more.
This is outside, right after Elaine walks out of the piano recital cracking up from the Tweety Pez dispenser:
===
JOHN MOLLIKA: Something I said? [no response] It's John... Mollika.

ELAINE: Oh, oh, *John*... Oh, hi John... Hi...

JM: What're you doing down here?

E: Oh, I was just at this recital and Jerry put a Pez dispenser on my leg and I started laughing.

JM: Jerry's in there? I heard you guys broke up.

E: We did. We're just hanging out.

JM: REally. ... You really look great.

E: Oh, uh, thank you. Are you still friends with Richie Appel?

JM: Oh, Richie, he's been doing comedy in L. A. for a few years. He just got back a month ago. He's kind of messed up. On drugs. I don't know what to do for the guy.

E: Have you thought about an intervention?

But what about when Jerry proposed to her, and she belatedly accepted in the Serenity Now? They always seemed to be this close to getting back together.

Now that part is very sitcommy... the almost but not quite hook-up. It's called sexual tension.

When ever Jer wanted to, Lainie said no way... when Elaine would get the hankerin', Jer would hold her off.
