After learning of the unexpected death of Paul, Cate and the kids must each deal with the loss of the beloved patriarch of the Hennessy family in their own way. To help console the family, Cate's parents — who are separated — put aside their marital differences and help the family through their time of need. James Garner and Suzanne Pleshette guest star as Cate's parents, on a special one-hour episode of 8 Simple Rules for Dating My Teenage Daughter.

All of us at ABC, Touchstone Television and The Walt Disney Company are shocked and heartbroken at the terrible news of John's passing. Our thoughts and prayers are with his wife and children at this very difficult time.

I know this epi must have been very hard for the cast to make. It must have been very difficult with out John.

I agree.

And as I read in another thread (not sure which one it was), somebody said that on this ep, all the tears are real.

I'm having my Kleenex ready for this ep.

That's not hard to believe. Just hope I'm not going to be too depressed for "Less Than Perfect," later on tonight. Still, I'm signing off the net completley so I can watch this prime-time ruined by fate.

Well.. you guys were right.. they did the whole "coming home with the milk" thing..

Oh man this epi made me cry so much. It made me think about my own dad and how I would feel if it happened to me. Then when Cate couldn't sleep in her bed it made me think about my husband and how much I would miss him if he was gone.

I really feel bad for John's wife and little girl. They are the ones who are the most heartbroken.

We miss you John

Don't forget his other children. You know they're mourning as well.

yes im sure they are very much in pain. He was a great dad.
