Question Chris, Jerry and Sherman???

Do you like this show better with Lucy and Viv's kids or without??? I think I like it better with the kids. Lucy seemed to be a little more believeable when she had kids. It gave her some responsibility and a lot of the comedy sprang out of the kids' problems.

I agree. I like the first three seasons with Viv and the kids better than the last three. It was still a great show, but Lucy's character seemed do dumb and there was no consistancy in the scripts because there were different writers each week. The kids definetely added some realism to the character, IMO.

Yes, true, she was more believable, but less funny!

I like both formats about the same. At first, I didn't care to much for the later seasons but now they have sort of grown on me and now I enjoy them just as much if not all as the earlier seasons.
But switching formats did take some time to get used to though.

I think the reason that I don't like the second format as much is because I've seen most of those episodes many times, they're the one's out on DVD and VHS. I only have a few of the earlier episodes, and the first season is my absolute favorite because those are the ones that I remember most. I think Nick@Nite stopped airing the show when I was seven, so those episodes bring back a lot of good memories, lol.

I'd have to say the dropping of the kid characters didn't affect this show much...they were hardly ever "featured" anyway...

I don't really care whether they were in it or not, but I wish they would have featured a whole episode about what happen to them.

Well, they did mention it. In the first California episode, Lucy mentioned that Viv had gotten remarried, so obviously she and Sherman moved in with her new husband. She told Mr. Mooney that she and Jerry had moved west in order to be closer to Chris, who was attending college out there. And it was mentioned that Jerry would be entering military school.

So, voila, all the kids were gone.

This sounds terrible to say, but I can't believe that such a high-profile star and series didn't hire better actors to play Lucy's kids!

Ralph Hart was fine as Viv's son Sherman (Ralph was a very natural actor), but Jimmy Garrett and Candy Moore were TERRIBLE! Candy Moore always sounded like she was reading her lines, and that "Gee Whiz!" wide-eyed expression that she had when talking made her scenes seem like a high school play....and a very amateurish play at that!

Please don't get me started on Jimmy Garrett....They thought that they were making him a little comedian, but he SHOUTED his lines in that stuffed-up nose manner of his. He was as unconvincing as Candy was! Jimmy didn't come across as "funny", he just came across as "obnoxious"....and if you HAVE to have an obnoxious kid on your show, at least have a TALENTED obnoxious kid who can read lines....like "MAKE ROOM FOR DADDY"'s Rusty Hamer!

I don't mean to be cruel, or even critical, but it just amazes me that a known perfectionist like Lucille Ball was satisfied and was willing to settle for the less-than-professional way that the actors playing her children came across.

Well, in Candy Moore's defense, she was coached to read her lines in that sing-songy way. She said in an interview that she hated doing the lines like that, and once tried to say her lines in a more normal tone. Lucille Ball chastised her, saying "What's the matter with you today? Up! Up!!!"

The kid with the stuffed-up nose was pretty bad, I agree.

Default Chris and Jerry...

I always liked seeing Chris and Jerry around, they made for a lot of good episodes the first couple of seasons. Lucy would sometimes bend over backwards for her kids and get into crazy scenarios (like playing Mr. Mooney's nurse to get him to sign a check for Chris' school dress or something like that). Her kids did give her a purpose and showed that she didn't get into those nutty situations without a good reason- most of the time it was doing something to benefit her children.

I liked the show better with the kids not just because of them but because of Viv,he show was funnier and better written. The show wasn't very good in the second format and some of the plots were just stupid.Lucy needed a strong person to play off of she had three on I love Lucy and then Viv was still there or The Lucy Show but when she left the show had very few good episodes and no strong character to play off of.

oh; so THAT'S what happened to the kids; for years I've always wondered about that!

And that episode where Jerry entered military school; I remember seeing part of that years ago as a rerun on a local station. (it was sometime in the 70s) but I didn't know until I just read that; that it was the first Calif. episode.
Since I only remember one scene though; I probably didn't see the whole episode.

The kids were okay but nothing special to me. Though Candy Moore kind of exemplified the teen of the time. But the reason for the first three seasons being better was the presence of Viv and the writers' being able to write for the two women getting into crazy situations.

I was wondering about this too. The few episodes I've seen recently didn't mention the kids at all.
