Question Fred @ Homeless Shelter Episode

It was on TvLand tonight. But everytime I see this episode, I always wonder what the deal is w/ the dude laid out in the cot next to Fred's. The one w/ the hat on & cigar in his mouth. He's dead, isn't he? At least he *looks* dead. I could swear I have a recollection of someone acknowledging he was dead. Maybe the full version is on the new dvds(?) But the tv version leaves you wondering...

Default Speedy recovery?

If the gentleman on the bunk next to Fred is dead there at the shelter, he apparently makes a recovery by the last scene, where I think he's one of the many shelter people who Fred invited to his house for the meal Julio's mother prepared.

He's still got the cigar in his mouth then, too.

Plus, in the next to last scene he's in, the one where Fred tells him to "shut up", he's pretty obviously breathing.

Fred said that man in the bunk next to him...."he was a big man in Washington DC until that stuff started."

Default Fred's Bed??

I think it was cut out of the TV Land version; but was it in this episode that Fred said that bed....."has so many bugs in it, it feels like he is sleeping at the Watergate."

I dunno. Then I guess TvLand is definitely cutting *something* out. In the episode, they deliberately show the guy just laying there motionless. He's in the very same position for what's interpreted as hours later when Lamont visits. The guy doesn't get up when the meal bell rings. His eyes are half open making him look like a corpse.

I think he was made *out* to be dead, but they didn't follow through w/ it at the end scene. (they probably figured no one would notice him in the big shuffle of people)

He seemed to be in a catatonic state. His stuff was still stolen, btw- remember, he woke up wearing nothing but his derby and shoes (and cigar still in his mouth )
