So if anyone here wants to see Thomas Haden Church post-Lowell it's on WE at 7:30PM. I'm guessing every weeknight. Remember, this is the show he left "Wings" to do. I personally think it's a very funny show. Although it only made 46 episodes, so I'm not in the majority there. They aired the first one tonight.
Stacey: So what are you Right-Wing? Ned: Actually, I'm Wingless. |

That is one FUNNY "inside" joke! I've never seen "Ned and Stacey" before, but I'm anxious to check it out, if only to see Thomas Haden Church in a role which apparently is SO different from Lowell Mather! |

i just caught the last 5 minutes of an episode....
didn't like it. haha. I'll gove it another chance though. It just didn't seem very funny. I didn't know that Debra Messing was on that show. She was highly annoying. lol. I think she's funny on "Will & Grace", but from what I saw of "Ned & Stacey", she annoyed me. lol. I'm kind of neutral about Thomas Haden Church on that show... I'l need to see another episode. I'll give the show another chance though, since I only saw 5 minutes of it. |

I saw my first "Ned and Stacey" tonight, and it's going to take some REAL getting used to!
I just can't handle Thomas Haden Church in that sarcastic "yuppie" role yet....it's almost like someone else's brain has been planted into Lowell Mather's body! This jarring "character shock" was probably a major reason why the "Ned and Stacey" series wasn't a big hit....actually, I could see Steven Weber as Ned before Thomas Haden Church...however, out of respect for Mr. Church and his "Wings" legacy, I WILL give "Ned and Stacey" a few more chances and try to get into the show. |

In thinking over the "Ned & Stacey" series, I would have to say that Thomas Haden Church's "Ned" HAS to be one of the most radical changes that an actor ever made going from one TV series to another....
Lucille Ball, John Ritter, Bill Cosby, Redd Foxx, Bob Newhart, Bea Arthur, Dick Van Dyke, Andy Griffith and others went from one TV series to another and played different characters...but the characters weren't TOO different! They didn't play a nice, naive person in one series and a totally obnoxious and nasty RAT in another! Plus, most of the above actors let at least a couple of seasons go by between different series...they didn't leave one series and go DIRECTLY into another. To Thomas Haden Church's credit, I think that it took real GUTS to do what he did.....to leave one character and go right into a completely DIFFERENT kind of character...but I also think that perhaps the quick change was more than what many viewers who had enjoyed him on "Wings" could handle!

In tonight's episode, Ned mentions the leap year. That got me thinking of Roy over at Wings. Since that same season, he was celebrating his birthday at that kid's restaurant.

I seem to be one of the few people who was glad Thomas went to Ned & Stacey. I mean, sure he was missed in the last two seasons of "Wings", but I wouldn't like "Ned & Stacey" if he wasn't Ned. And even though the show lasted for two seasons, it almost seemed right, since from the beginning, Ned and Stacey said they would only be together for two years. It's like they knew from the beginning how long the show would last. Plus it gave Thomas a chance to play something other than Lowell and I'm sure he loved that. Since Lowell wasn't in every episode, it gave me a chance to appreciate him more while he's there. Sometimes it takes a character to leave a show before I realize how great they were. |

Anyway, I agree that Thomas Haden Church has improved as an actor since he was in N&S. I hope his next BIG movie, "Sideways" (by the director of "About Shmidt" (sp?)), which is being distributed by Fox Searchlight, does well. He's supposed to have a top-billing role as one of the main characters. Maybe he'll possibly be upgraded to B-list actor status. The more support he gets, the more recodnised he will be. The only thing that I hope doesn't happen is that the tabloids will get after him if "Sideways" gets popular. He has a pretty peaceful life without the press on him (there are rarely ever any articles about Thomas... anywhere). I pray that his life stays the same. We don't need anyone calling him TeeChurch (something like JLo?). |
