Ok name movies that bombed when they came out, and either had to be re-released and was a huge hit, or eventually it found it's audience...maybe like in the next Generation.
The Wizard of Oz When it first came out critics called it "Stupid and Un-imaginative" |

got another one
"The Pirate" with Judy Garland and Gene Kelly. I don't know if it bombed, but it certainly wasn't a big success, and within the decade it was already a cult classic Gene Kelly referred to it as "a joke that took about ten years for people to get."

Well, there are a lot of movies that didn't necessarily bomb but did not make a lot of money because of distribution and such that have become incredibly popular and revered- and made their money on video:
Fast Times at Ridgemont High Clerks Donnie Darko Memento Swingers This is Spinal Tap Rocky Horror Picture Show A Christmas Story I'm sure there are dozens more. |

The Wicker Man never bombed, but it was kept on the shelf for many years before it found a huge following and is now considered a cult classic.

I believe Alice, Sweet Alice is another one. It was first distributed under the titles Communion and Holy Terror, but didn't do very well so they decided to change the title to.. Alice, Sweet Alice.

Tod Browning's Freaks didn';t get an audience because it was so shocking- but about 30 years later it got some kind of cult following.
Didn't Phantom of the Paradise bomb but then did real well with a cult following? |

Wasn't Miracle On 34th Street kind of a bomb? I think that it was released in the Summer or something? Now it is considered a classic!

Miracle on 34th Street was certainly NOT a bomb! It was released in the summer, but the studio was very crafty - they deliberately did not market it as a Christmas movie - it was nominated for best picture, and won best supporting actor
![]() It's a Wonderful Life was not a bomb either. It wasn't a huge hit, but it wasn't a failure by any stretch of the imagination. Also nominated for Best Picture, (it lost to my favorite move of all time: THE BEST YEARS OF OUR LIVES) it was a critical success. Both films became very popular as time went by, but weren't by any means failures in their own times

"Citizen Kane" was a box office and critical dud when it was released, but now it's considered a classic.
