The American remake of Coupling has slid off its prime time TV spot after poor reviews.

The risque comedy about the lives of six thirty-somethings was touted as the new Friends which is in its final season. But ratings were average for the three weeks it aired and the critics hated it.

Now, NBC has moved Coupling - remade with American actors with a script nearly identical to the British original - away from the prime 9.30pm Thursday slot.

It is being replaced this week by a special showing of Whoopi Goldberg's new sitcom, Whoopi.

Entertainment experts in the US believe Coupling would have remained in its prime time spot if network executives thought ratings would improve.

The first episode, aired late last month drew about 16 million viewers, NBC said.

Last week, Coupling was only the 35th most watched show in America, with 10.4 million viewers.

More than four million people changed channel or turned off when the show came on, according to the figures from Nielsen-Media Research.

The show, set in Chicago, has been panned by the critics. Newsweek wrote that Coupling "gives sex, comedy and television a bad name".

Daily Variety said "the cast has no likeable characters, motivation for every act is sexual, and the theme of moronic men versus wily women has been played out".

I am glad...I liked the first episode but that was all...I guess there could be hope for Teddy to come back after all!

It's bad enough they're pulling the show for sweeps, but when they pull the show before sweeps, that is not a good sign.

What is NBC going to do next year when they can't "supersize" Friends for November sweeps?

I have never liked sweeps period. It makes shows resort to stupid stunts and cliffhangers just to get attention for their networks. And that usually means shows are taken off the air to make room for trashy TV movies or even trashier reality shows.

How can a network like NBC expect to find the next big hit if they keep pulling new shows?

Here endeth the rant...

i only saw the first episode, which was only because jay was in it. the past two episodes i've taped, but have yet to watch. i didn't think it would go far because it was entirely based on sex. but it sucks if they won't show it anymore, it was good, not the best, but good.

Coupling hasn't been cancelled. NBC is not showing it during the November sweeps because it's not going to get the tremendous ratings they want.

That's totally true. I did watch it while I waited for ER to come on. It's a funny show. Sad there moving it

Yeah, I wasn waiting for ER to come on too. I heard on 12/4 it's off the air, in order for the new show on Tuesdays to come on. So, for Tuesday, it'll be: 8:00 -The Tracy Morgan Show, 8:30 -Whoopi, 9:00 -Happy Family, 9:30 -Frasier, and 10:00 -SVU. Thursday, it'll be: 8:00 -Friends, 8:30 -Scrubs, 9:00 -Will + Grace, 9:30 -Good Morning Miami, and 10:00 -ER!
