Default Today's music is either BORING or ANNOYING!

I can hardly stand to listen to the radio anymore. There are so many boring new songs out there right now. Songs like, "Why Don't You and I", "Amazing", and then top 40 plays way too much rap. What is going on? What songs do find boring or annoying? I feel like there's nothing for me to listen to. I end up having to listen to the classic rock station, but they play the same songs over and over. Is anyone else frustrated with today's music? Wasn't music better and more entertaining in the 80's? I think it was.

Uh ohh! Don't get me started!
"I feel your pain". I did a thread veeery similar to this one some weeks back & I said almost the same things you said... except I was saying em *in* the 80s!

Back in the 80s, I was hating stuff like Milli Vanilli, New Kids.., Tiffany. All crap. I think the best music of the 80s came out of the early 80s. Lots of that clever new wave was happening. After around '83 or so, when MTV started to really take hold, I think it's been a downward spiral for the most part. But there were a few bright spots along the way. The grunge thing really shook things up *and*...the rise of rap. Some may not like it, but it really did catch on around the world. I like it. Just that I can't stand the very commercial stuff. (eg: P. Diddy et al)

I've found there's only one way to avoid lousy music- avoid the radio. Radio isn't what it used to be. It's all controlled by big, faceless media giants & that's exactly why when you turn on your classic rock (or any popular genre) station, you're hearing the same 10 songs again & again. I go by word-of-mouth these days or cool magazine review. I don't watch MTV.

I read an interiew w/ Tom Petty a while ago & he said "At the risk of sounding like an old geezer, I don't wanna say 'today's music doesn't come close to 70s & 60s music'...but it's true!" (I'm paraphrasing) Where are our Dylans? Where are our Marvin Gayes & Arethas? Where are our Beatles? We're not seeing
pioneers anymore.

And what scares me is the thought of some kid in the year 2023 saying something like- "Man, I swear! Why can't we have good stuff like Justin Timberlake & The Spice Girls??!"

I'm 15 years old, and I don't listen to a lot of the music that's out today. I listen to some of the rock stuff that's out now, but mostly I like to listen to early 90's rock. In my opinion, music today seems to be more about how much money or power a person can get out of it. It's all about being an icon in today's world, not writing and playing music that other people can relate with, not making music just because you love it...what it's really about.

Music was way better in the 60's and 70's, as soon as bands started making videos and record companies figured out that they could sell an image everything started going downhill

I listen to 2 local stations: Xfm (pop/alternative), and Jack!fm - who's slogan is "playing what we want!", its a cool station that plays obscure/cool/hits from any time from the 60's to the present. Take a look in the "what are you listening to now" thread for an idea - everything i posted there was from that station.

The only new music that's good doesn't get the airplay it deserves. I like weezer, Hot Hot Heat, the Donnas...

Mainstream music isn't up to standards nowadays. You have to dig through the indies to find the gems.

I'm 12 and the only new music I listen to is country and soft rock. My friends think I'm weird for preferring 70's and 80's rock.

Good for you sticking to your musical guns like that in the face of peer pressure!

Odds are, your friends will come around in time & realize the real value of much recent music. You're miles ahead of em!

As the song goes- "Hold Your Head Up"!

80's rock is like... the best thing ever invented. Don't worry, I'm only 14 (well almost 5) and my friends just can't understand why I don't listen to Rap. Ick.

You're a pretty smart 5 year old then.

I like some rap...but all of that Beyonce/Destiny's Child/Ashanti R&B crap annoys the hell out of me. Same goes with Britney Spears and all that other bubble gum pop. Chirstina at least has a voice.
