Apple to Launch iTunes for Windows next week - Sitcoms Online Message Boards

Apple Computer is expected next week to expand its online music service to Windows-based computers.

The Mac maker has scheduled an event for next Thursday at San Francisco's Moscone West convention hall. "The year's biggest music story is about to get even bigger," Apple said in an invitation to journalists.

The company is expected to launch the long-awaited Windows version of the iTunes Music Store at the event, according to Wall Street brokerage Needham. Apple earlier said it would release the Windows service sometime before the end of the year.

Although Apple popularized the pay-per-song store idea when it launched the Macintosh version of the service in April, the market is quickly becoming crowded. Musicmatch has launched a similar service and is expected to partner with direct PC giant Dell. Roxio announced its Napster 2.0 service on Thursday, with PC seller Gateway among its partners. Others, such as Yahoo and Amazon.com, are seen as likely players, while more PC makers, including Hewlett-Packard, are expected to partner with one service or another.

Needham analyst Charles Wolf estimated in July that online music stores in the United States could generate $3 billion in annual revenue, assuming they can capture 15 percent of the free file-sharing market. Wolf projected that Apple could claim 20 percent market share, giving it a potential yearly revenue boost of $600 million. Apple said last month that it had sold 10 million songs through the iTunes store.

Still, even those optimistic about the market don't see Apple getting a major boost to the bottom line.

"At a profit of less than 10 cents per song, the music store does not represent a major income opportunity for Apple," Wolf wrote in the July report. Still, the company could benefit from increased iPod sales, he said.

I think they should charge a monthly fee, like $20 a month or something. 79 cents per song IS BULL!!!

You know they do have these services... like Rhapsody... 9.95 a month to listen to unlimited music then 79 cents a song to burn it to CD...

yes, but that is not the same as paying $20-25 flat monthly fee and unlimited downloads AND ABILITY TO BURN!!

iTunes DOES have a monthly fee service - but they haven't said what sort of restrictions they will have for Windows users

well, people download because it's cheap and they don't wanna blow all their money on music. I think $25 is fair for a monthly fee. It'd scare those who only download 10 songs a month away, but those who download 100 or more will have it okay. And they can just divvy everything up. Like if you downloaded 100 songs, the artists/labels get 25 cents. 25 cents ain't jack, but it's still better than nothing. And the fan would feel a better value for the buck.

In the fall, 100's of A-list titles come out, some of us like a lot of those artists and don't wanna get ripped off.

with the monthly fee, does the 79 cents go out the window, and the downloads are unlimited as long as you pay the fee? $9.95 for an entire cd, WITHOUT the artwork, without the actual disc that you could resell if you're sick of it, etc... is a bigger ripoff to the consumers than the 10 cents an artist loses is to them when someone downloads their music

you're not getting the point. That's why MP3's should be free, or at least by a monthly fee with unlimited burn/downloads. $9.95 for just one entire cd at Apple I-Tunes IS A RIPOFF. If you're going to pay $10 for a cd, it better be the actual thing with the artwork and the actual disc SO YOU CAN TAKE IT TO FYE OR A USED PLACE AND SELL IT IF YOU GET SICK OF IT OR DON'T LIKE IT. If you're paying $9.95 for an entire album on MP3, you're getting screwed. Because if someone BUYS a cd, they should have the right to take it and trade/sell it when sick of it. If you're to pay for a cd, it should be able to have resale value.
