June's Aunt Martha - Sitcoms Online Message Boards

I haven't always watched this show so I'm just curious as to know why Aunt Martha was like a mother to June? Was it ever explained on the show about June's mother or if she had one and if she did wasn't she a nurturing mother and Aunt Martha had to care for her? I do know that June spent summers with her but I never heard about her relationship with her mother. Can anyone tell me?

I've seen every ep and I only remember Junes mother mentioned once or twice. The only grandparent that is talked about alot is Wards father and he is usually mentioned in a negative way. It never is explained why June and Aunt Martha were so close or what kind of relationship June had with her mother.

i've always assumed her parents died or something...the way she says that she was practically the only mother she ever had, and how aunt martha helped her out and stuff

I do remember June talking about her parents on LITB. I think she mentioned them a few times when referring back to when she started dating Ward. But in the episode of the NLITB when Aunt Martha died, June mentions that Martha had raised her since she was 10 years old, indicating that her parents had died. Or maybe just her mother died. I'm not sure.

i didn't know she really died! i'd like to see NLITB but the chances of it ever coming on again are probably pretty slim

I'm pretty sure in one of the episodes June and Ward are talking about something June's mother had cooked for Ward when they were dating; and also Ward jokingly told June once that he either dated or married her because her father had a HuppMobile (is that right?.........I'm guessing that was some kind of car) But I never got a chance to see the New LITB. I would LOVE to!!!!!

June also mentions boarding school a few times. It seems like she didn't have parents who were living, but it's never explained. Also, what about her sister Peggy? The one who had the baby?

It was, indeed, a car. The Hupmobile was an automobile built by the Hupp Motor Company from 1909 through 1940. The Hupp Motor Company of Detroit, Michigan, started building automobiles in 1908 and introduced its creation, called the Model 20, to the public at the Detroit Auto Show in February, 1909. In 1912 a second model was available, the Model H (usually referred to as the Model 32). The following year, the Model 20 was discontinued.

It's not so strange that you've never heard of one. The Hupp Motor Company made only a total of 500,000 automobiles during its thirty years of production.

And that is probably more than you ever expected or wanted to know about the Hupmobile.

First of all, thanks for the info Commander. Would you say then that those cars were owned by wealthier people? That would make sense because I think June was raised in a higher class family.

And, Frani, the only time I remember June's sister being mentioned again was when she told Ward that Wally was looking more like her everyday (and Ward said he would have Wally get a haircut). One can only assume she was talking about Peggy but who knows. I wonder if any of her family was addressed on the New LITB?

I always kind of thought that her parents sent her "east" to boarding school and she stayed with Aunt Martha during that time; but then it wouldn't be boarding school, would it???

Yeah, it would make sense. Unfortunately, from all I could find in research, it appears to fall the other way. The Hupp Motor Company's philosophy was to build a car in the working man's price range. That idea, along with a strong commitment to quality and workmanship, produced many years of dependable, tough, and durable machines affordable to the working class.

Of course, this could fit June's family, even if it were in a higher class. June gives every indication of being raised in a practical, conservative home. It could be her father could afford to buy a more impressive machine, but he didn't see any need to show off by buying anything impressive or ostentatious. The Hupmobile was reliable and low maintenance, and that might be all Mr. Bronson cared about--basic, dependable transportation.

I don't recall any of June or Ward's relatives being mentioned on NLITB, except for that one episode about Aunt Martha passing away ('A Part of Life') and the episode where Ward's sister Gloria came to Thanksgiving dinner (played by Hugh's Beaumont's real sister Gloria).
