I usually assume it was because of some distant or financial way her father acted (I think I got this impression from a "cafeteria episode"), but as I was listenin' to "Like Mother, Like Daughter" the other night at work, I heard Blair say "My mother's had three marriages break up over 'innocent little get-togethers' like this!" in reply to Mrs. Garrett (may not have the quote verbatim). That's the first time that line really sank in to me...and made me realize the inconsistancy!
So, according to her line here in season 1, it's Monica's behavior that broke up the marriage! Can anyone clarify the truth, or is this one o' those "pick whichever contradiction ya like" things? lol |

Blair's father was probably consumed with his work and being wealthy, so he ignored Blair's mother. She, in turn, probably started to get lonely and have affairs on the side.

Oh yeah---I didn't even think of the possibility that they could both have been responsible!
![]() Although, I do have a hard time picturin' the "2nd" Monica bein' flirty and extramarital...though appearances can be deceiving, lol. |

...And he was distant and calculating, later using his visits with Blair as tax write-offs.

I know: i wanted to cry for BLAIR in the episode 'Daddy's girl' because you could tell how crushed she was (even JO noticed) but she kept on as her usual self, trying to hide her emotions... ![]() ![]()

Blair was there to help Molly through her parents divorce. Ironically at this time Lisa's parents were divorcing.

Yeah. It's just so disturbing to even think about. What father would DO that?

That's another reason why BLAIR is my favourite: i see so much suffering inside her, and have always felt that she was wearing a mask and playing the 'shallow' and 'snobbish' rich girl to hide her true feelings.... ![]() ![]()

Well, the prototype was. It's very hard to picture the "real" Monica Warner lke that.
I feel that's not fair to David. I think he said it was his accountant that came up with the write-off idea. I can't remember for sure, but either way, I still don't understand why you're so hard on most of the parents when this is one of your favorite shows. What would be disturbing is if he abused her or disowned her. David wasn't perfect, but he had good parts to him. He really showed how good his heart was in "Where's Poppa?", and Blair told him though he wasn't the ideal father, he was good enough for her, and she loved him. |

I liked BLAIR's parents overall: they weren't the adult role model like MRS G, but still. In fact, i liked all of the girl's parents (although i'd say TOOTIE's parents were my least favourite).... ![]() ![]()
