Question no laughter=less funny?

is it just me, or does anyone think FOL is a little funnier when u hear the audience laughs? cuz during the "cruising" ep, i realized that i laugh more when other ppl laugh. u know what i mean? lol.

I agree with you, faith27. It is different without the laugh tracks, but I still laughed a lot during the episode.

If you ever take a Psychology 101 course in college, you will learn about this phenomenon (I can't remember what it's called, because it's been several years since I've been in a psych class) Anyhow, it's basically a principle of human beings feeling they fit more into a culture by following a lead. When hearing someone else laugh at a joke, it seems funnier to you. Of course, this is all happening subconsiously. Producers of television shows are very aware of this, so that's why there is a laugh track. In fact, producers will actually recruit "confederates" to sit in the audience and laugh with a very distinct laugh at certain times, as this will cause other audience members to laugh harder or louder than they otherwise would.

This is all a very interesting part of psychology, but is also very complicated. The university that I went to had a semester long graduate level course on the psychology of laughter.

So, in conclusion, there is a scientific explanation as to why you felt the show wasn't as funny without the laugh track.

I didn't need the audience to laugh to make me laugh. I was gut laughing through the whole episode. This ep is one of my favorites

------------------
Blair: No one look now but there are some classy guys beside us
Tootie & Nat: Where where
Blair: I’m never going out with you guys again
Tootie: I bet they like us there stopping
JO: Its a red light
Tootie: Um Blair I think you should see this
JO: What
Nat: Blair’s classy guys are mooning us

I personally thought the episode would've been better with a laugh track. There were certain moments that would've been much better. Without it some parts just seemed akward. One part that comes to mind is when Tootie slaps Natalie and then she comes to her senses. Without a laugh it just seemed weird. That's just how I saw it.

I agree, that Cruising episode was a snorer without the laughs!

Actually I thought the episode was real good. The laugh track helps me laugh more too. Laugh Tracks and audiences help support funny areas on a show.

No laugh track = funnier episode!

(That's my belief, anyway!)

I think it did seem a little awkward without the audience laughter. Almost as if a comedian told a joke and got no audience response.

I still liked the 'Cruisin' episode nonetheless.

I thought it was funny, too...I just wondered why the audience didn't laugh.

int eh cruising ep the girls were ACTUALLY cruising around (whereever they were) and so there was like NO audience TO laugh.. but it's not that I laugh more when other people laugh... it's that i feel like im laughing at the wrong part or somethign that is incredibly STUPID becuase i hear no audience laughing to it.. after watchign FOL for so long and your used to the audience being there to laugh at the stuff that even isn't funny.. you just kinda tune them out.. or at least i tune them out... and then when i go to laugh usually an audience is there laughing.. but when you laugh and there is no audience there to laugh.. you feel out of place.. at least i do!

Did that make Any sense?

Thumbs down

Generally, I don't need to hear laughter in the show - if a scene is funny, I'll laugh. However, if there has to be laughter in an episode, it is better if it comes from a real studio audience, rather than a canned laugh track. Laugh track laughter (often used to bolster scenes that aren't very funny) usually sounds forced and unrealistic and usually becomes a distraction.

In TFOL, the use of laughter was especially inapropriate in the episodes "A Death in the Family" and "Less than Perfect." Neither episode should have had any laughter (even in the humorous scenes).

What episodes don't have the laugh tracks? I know the "cruising", Australia and Paris eps don't have it. But when you know the characters personas so well, ya don't really need a "guide" to tell ya when to laugh. :-)
