Default Nick@Nite's Roseanne Marathon Scores Big

More Than 33 Million Viewers Tune In to Nick at Nite's Week-Long Roseanne Marathon

NEW YORK, Oct. 1 -- More than 33 million cumulative viewers
tuned into Nick at Nite last week to watch the network's week-long marathon launch of Roseanne, one of the most talked about and popular sitcoms in television history. The marathon showcase, which pre-empted Nick at Nite's regularly scheduled programming, made Nick at Nite the Number Two network in
all of cable -- right behind ESPN -- among Adults 18-49 viewers, the network's core audience, during its programming hours of 9 p.m.-6 a.m. (ET/PT). The Roseanne marathon aired on Nick at Nite from Sunday, Sept. 21, to Thursday, Sept. 25.
Additionally, among Women 18-34, Nick at Nite was the most-watched basic cable network, beating Lifetime in the same demo by a whopping +77% margin, and among Women 18-49, the network ranked #2, just behind Lifetime during the
marathon's programming hours. Among total viewers (P2+), Nick at Nite was the 3rd most-watched basic cable network, behind ESPN and Lifetime, respectively, during its programming hours. As a result of the Roseanne marathon, Nick at Nite experienced its most-watched week among Women 18-49 for 2003.
"Nick at Nite's strong ratings during Roseanne's marathon provides further proof of America's passion for great modern classic sitcoms," explains Larry W. Jones, Executive Vice President and General Manager, TV Land and Nick at Nite. "These numbers are especially encouraging, given that the Roseanne marathon occurred during the launch of the Fall season."

That's not the average. 33 million people added up for all 5 days from 9pm-6am. So 33/45 hrs., under a million people per episode on average. Which is great for cable.

No surpise to me that "Roseanne" did well for Nick at Nite. I mean TBS kept airing "Roseanne" episodes for how long. Obviously they kept it on their so long because it did very well.

Does anyone know about the ratings of "Roseanne" for the Oxygen cable network?

I would love to also see Roseanne on DVD. All episodes un-edited and a special bloopers feature and everything. That would be SSSSSSSSSSOOOOOOOOOOOO AWSOME!!! I'd shell out the money necesary for all nine seaons, definately!!!

I watched the N@N marathon AND the Oxygen marathon, and I now watch the episodes on both networks everyday.

If you don't have a Nielsen box, they don't know that you watched it, and they could care less. So long as the people with the boxes watch, they're fine. It's an unfortunate fact about the tv business.

lol, funny you brought that up. The Neilson episode was just on N@N less than an hour ago.

The Nielsen system is quite messed up to say the least.

Say for example... a show gets a 1.0 rating. That means 1.0% of people with that channel(the channel's universe) watched the show. What that amounts to in actual viewership numbers(hard numbers like 6.2 million) differs channel-to-channel since each channel is avaliable in a different number of homes. They get the 1.0 rating from the number of people with a Nielsen box that watch that certain program, then figure that that's how the rest of America went to.

Yeah... it's quite messed up and is in major need of a revamp.

It depends on what measurement the network uses. For "The Sopranos," HBO will often use a HBO households ratings, so it's usually in the 20's. But in reality, it's a 5-6 HH rating overall. HBO uses the measurement it does to make its shows seem bigger than they really are. But N@N seems to use the standard HH rating.

HH ratings are not that useful because it doesn't tell how many people per household are watching a particular show. For instance, a show like 20/20 draws about 1.35 viewers per household, but "The Simpsons" is usually at 1.75. For a 10 HH rating, that's the difference between 17.5mil viewers and 13.5. That's a big difference.

But how can Nielsen tell if someone watches the whole show or just drops in?

I participated with Nielson late last year. I had to keep a journal of all the television shows that I watched for 10 minutes or more. I was going to look up the TV listings for my area to find every single time that Roseanne aired for the week that I did this and enter it in even if I didn't watch it. Unfortunately, I forgot to do so before I mailed it back to Nielson, but at least they got the Nick at Nite viewings from back then for me.
