How did Wilburs wife never catch him talking to Ed? She was always nearby. This show was really science ficton, because, a wife finds out about everything!

But no, it could not have been kept a secret from everyone else for years running, especially with Ed's unhorselike shenanigans.

Did Wilbur ever try to tape Ed talking about fillies, or problems with his mane and tail, or his 4 iron shoes, et al, and play it for his wife?

I can't say he did. But I don't think he'd try. He was afraid of his wife finding out. I wonder why? What would she have done? Was it ever explained?

In the first episode, Wilbur tape recorded Ed's voice. Ed then replied, "How are you going to convince anyone that the voice on that tape came from a horse?" And that ended that.

It was clear that as Wilbur's feelings for Mister Ed deepened, he didn't want Carol to know that Ed could talk.
It could be that he was afraid that Carol would want to contact scientists to study this amazing discovery which would cause him to lose Ed.

It could be that Wilbur realized that if Carol knew that Ed could talk, it would change the dynamic of the situation. Carol was already jealous of the time he spent with Ed, and knowing he could talk would probably intensify her jealousy.

Who knows if the writers even thought it through as I'm speculating here, but it's fun to come up with theories anyway.

That's hilarious. Ed was so smart, and had the best one-liners.

My husband, who is loving the show with me now, told me has a vague recollection from years ago....during the show's original run.
He recalls maybe a party scene or something, and there's a bratty kid there....Ed talks in front of the kid, and Wilbur asks him why, and Ed has some hilarious comeback like, 'As if anyone is going to believe this brat.'

Who knows if my husband's memory is serving him correctly, but he's sure it was something along those lines.

well if video cameras exsisted back then, (forgive me I werent born in the 60s) than why didnt wilbur video tape mr. ed talking?

There is one ep w/ Bobby Buntrock, who ended up on Hazel soon after, playing a boy in a park to whom Ed talks. When Wilbur asks Ed why he talked to the boy, Ed says "Who believes kids anyway?". Surely enough, soon after the boy tells his mom that the horse talked to him, and his mom doesn't believe him.

Yes infact in the VERY FIRST episode he did... but as ED pointed out as Wilbur was going out the door and Ed complemented him on the nice tape recorder....

"How you going to convince anyone that voice on the tape is a horse???"

Lucky for Ed home video tape was still more than a decade away

While there were expensive B&W industrial/education reel to reel videorecorders in the early 70's it was the Betamax in 1976 that kicked off the home movement.... and even then just broadcast stuff, cameras weren't hot until into the 80's stilll large and wire teathered to a not light separate recorder. The first camcorders weren't until the very late 80's.
