It's true. "The Flintstones", like a lot of tv programs produced during the late 1950s/early 1960s, was broadcast in black & white. (Of course, we know that Hanna and Barbera had made these cartoons in color, as anyone who has seen this show will attest.)

The first episode broadcast (in b&w) was "The Flintstone Flyer" (30 September 1960), in which our boys Fred and Barney get out of going to the opera with Wilma and Betty so they can go bowling, utilizing Barney's new invention, the "Barney-copter" (re-named "The Flintstone Flyer" by Fred.) This was not the first episode made, however...that distinction belongs to "The Swimming Pool"(14 October 1960), the THIRD episode broadcast, in which Fred and Barney feud over a shared swimming pool.(practically all of the "Flintstones" episodes made were shown out of production sequence, a situation that has been rectified in sydication.)

The Flintstones began broadcasting in color in its third season, the fall of 1962. This was when ABC first became capable of color broadcasting. The Jetsons also premiered that season and was broadcast in color.

Here's a rare "Flintstones" opening and closings of that show black & white featuring a Winston sponsor and a commercial. It's located at http://www.toontracker.com/realvid/flintstones.ram
