ABC discontinued it after August 30, 1997, but if you ask me, ABC needs to bring it back more than ever!!!

Didn't Oprah have something to do with having these shows cancelled because ABC affiliates kept pre-empting her show to show them?

Here's a clip from the "ABC After School Special Promo" from 1974.

I wouldn't be surprised if she did. She makes me so sick, sometimes.

he also played Tony Ranndalls son on "The Odd Couple"

Wouldn't surprise me if that was true. Oprah really bugs me.

I agree. We do need them now more than ever.

What happened was that in the mid 80s, a lot of ABC affiliates started showing "Oprah" at 4:00 and got huge ratings. The "Afterschool Special" was shown only once every two weeks, but the affiliates became reluctant to pre-empt "Oprah", which got higher ratings than the specials. For a while, Oprah actually produced some of the "Afterschool Specials" in the early 90s (those episodes tended to be talk or documentary episodes, rather than dramatic ones). I believe this was an effort on ABC's part to encourage the affiliates to carry the specials. But this effort was futile, and ABC eventually gave up and ended the specials.

I agree they need to bring them back. With everything that goes on in todays world, it could give kids piece of mind. I also agree that what happen to them is definitly TALK SHOWS. That's all that's ever on anymore. If you don't get cable, forget it. They really don't have shows anymore just for kids on reg. t.v. (local stations).
