According to this great web site about the movies:
http://www.geocities.com/northvalleyleague/ The "Did You Know?" section contains the following two excerpts: Here is some good information that was sent to me by David Pollock: There are a couple of facts I want to help you clear up. First, the original movie and some scenes from the second movie were filmed at Mason Park in Chatsworth. The park is still there on Mason Ave. just north of Devonshire. The ballfield has been completely redone and there is nothing to indicate there was ever a movie filmed there. I was just there about a month ago to take a picture for a newpaper article. From Terry Patrick: Some more information on the filming of the Bad News Bears: Yes, it was filmed at Mason Park. The only thing that was added to the park was the fence - they used the original dugouts and backstop. The bleachers were original, but I believe they added another one. I remember playing on the field on all the time and we were all excited that the field now had a fence and scoreboard! But, that was torn down after filming. Another thing was that they added grass to the infield - originally it was just dirt - because of the upkeep, they tore up the grass shortly after filming and went back to all dirt. The green sheds were original as well, but I think the "snack bar" was actually the equipment shed for the park. I remember Walter Matheau always wearing a big straw hat. My friends and brothers sat in the bleachers to be extras but were always shooed away. Most of all, I remember it being boring! Hours of nothing. So mostly we just played on the swing sets behind the field and probably missed a majority of actual filming. I know we were there every day that summer watching them film. Outside of Walter Matheau, the real star that everyone pointed to and wanted to meet was the kid on the Yankees, we all remember him from the TV show "Courtship of Eddie's Father". Another thing that was added - the parking lot. The only thing there was dirt, a bike rack and maybe a hitching post (as there were a lot of horse ranches in the area at the time). The actual parking lot was on top of the hill behind the Bears dugout. I remember some cars parking there to pick people up, but it was not the parking lot. In the late 70's Mason Park had a major makeover - the green huts were gone and a huge gym and new parking lot took its place. Also a whole new fence backstop was put in. |
