Ever notice that little disclaimer at the end of many films? I often wonder when I look at older films, possibly before certain laws were put into place concerning animals' safety in films, if animals were often really hurt &/or killed in movies. I was watching a movie on tv from 1970 & man- I could swear they actually filmed a pig getting slaughtered. It looked pretty convincing if it was done with gadget/trickery...

Unfortunately, what you saw was probably real. Before 1980, animals had little protection. Today, The American Humane Association oversees the treatment of animals in the production of all movies and television shows.

I read once where they had to drain Tony Soprano's pool on The Sopranos to film a scene where there were ducks in his pool--because the chlorine was harmful.

They can't so much as kill a mouse now on a movie set.

And on the movie "Just Married" with Brittney Murphy and Ashton Kutcher, a roach is supposed to fall on Ashton's character and he said in an interview "I couldn't do anything about it and at one point it was heading towards my mouth."
