Do you think NAN is losing it's image for being a classic TV network? - Sitcoms Online Message Boards

Lately we have been seeing shows that have recently left the network airwaves. Shows that have ended in the late 80's and early 90's are being aired on NAN. Head of the Class, Perfect Strangers, soon to be ROC(February only), Newhart and The Wonder Years. Then you have your shows that started out over or nearly 20 years ago but ended in the late 80's and early 90's: The Facts Of Life, Family Ties and Cheers.

These shows originally aired at a time that might seem long ago to most but ended prodution in a more recent era. (Even Facts of Life falls into that category) I don't know. I mean Cheers' first few seasons seem more age appropriate for NAN while the later episodes are ones that are normally aired 5 days a week like any other show. Do you think NAN maintains that Classic TV edge? Do you think NAN is losing it's edge for being a classic TV network? Do you think it's becoming just another network going contemporary?(I.E TBS)

I'm in my early 20's and it seems just like yesterday I was watching the Last episode of Family Ties on a sunday night on NBC or watching TFOL on Saturday night when the guest star on the "Seven Little Indians" episode keeps saying:"Tootie" and everybody is being killed. I remember being 10yrs old and getting mad at Beverly Ann for kissing the guy Blair liked and now a network that I remember airing mainly black and white shows is now airing shows that origianlly aired thru 1993. Wow.

What do you guys think?

I think that TVLand is now given the "Classic" name that Nick at Nite used to have... and The Facts of Life is the "youngest" show on Nick at Nite... it was let off in the year 88 and the next newwest show i would have to say is three's company but hat was a show in the 70's... i don't know if there was another show that is on nick at nite that aired in the 80's but i DO know that The Facts of Life is the "youngest" show on Nick at Nite right now... but I'm sure if it wasn't so requested or loved that it wouldn't be on... they still maintain their classic pretty well with I Love Lucy, All in The Family, Jeffersons, Brady Bunch, Gilligans Island, Beverly Hillbilli's, taxi, lavern and shirly... they are still classic tv... in my opinoin anyways...

Once you think about it though, TVLAND is the place for classics - it's motto is 'times change, great TV doesn't' But, think about N@N motto 'al sitcoms, all night long'. So N@N isn't nessarily a classic TV channel anymore.

I know I'm getting old when Nick at Nite starts rerunning shows that were on network TV when N@N first began.

It seems to me that the longer we go on, the more old TV shows people start wondering about. It's like, "What ever happened to..." and there are just more and more. At this point I think it's difficult for them because they do only have like what, 8 hours of programming a day? They can only show a few shows at a time. Who knows, maybe 3 years ago when we could still watch Facts on USA we would've been saying, "is it really ready for n@n?" I think they should branch of and create all thse sub-networks (there are like a million channels now after all) and there should be like the 50's channel, 60's, etc. Now THAT would be cool.

When N@N brought the Wonders Years over in the Fall of 1997 when it went off in 1993 (I believe thats what someone said) I think they started to lose the "classic tv" image. To me classic tv is shows that can stand the test of time and a show thats off for four years has not stood the test of time. With FOL, I think this message board is enough to say that it has stood the test of time and the fact people can identify with the issues. I'm looking foward to the later episodes right now because I can identify with Jo's indecisions about the future because I'm in the same boat right now. I think the current line-up can be considered "classic tv". The Wonder Years just stuck out like a sore thumb.

I agree with Devestation that maybe 'The Facts of Life' is just the first of the new generation of classic television. I have'nt talked to a single person that said FOL should'nt be on N@N, because it has stood the test of time(even though not that much time) as with the other more elder shows,'All in the Family','Laverne and Shirley, 'Gilligan's Island' etc. Hopefully we will all feel the same way in 20 years...

I think N@N can retain its classic TV image if it continues to show a mix of shows from different time periods. It would be a lot easier if N@N was on a seperate network 24-hrs a day & not just "at nite"--that way, a much bigger mix of sitcoms could be shown. I do think though, that if they ever got rid of "I Love Lucy" I couldn't call them a classic TV network anymore--in my opinion, that show's what N@N is founded on.

Classic TV Man- If they were ever to discontinue the kid oriented programming during the day I wouldn't want to see my cousins and 10-12 years ago I would be really upset, but now that I'm 20, I'm all for your suggestion!!

It's the kids programming that pays for the Classic sitcoms. Rugrats is a top rated show. So is Spongebob Squarepants, for that matter.

Besides, NIck's classic kids shows are great stuff... some of 'em belong on Nick at Nite themselves. Ren and Stimpy oughta be on at 8 pm as the first Nick at Nite show.

But that's beside the point here...

Nick at Nite lost their status as a true Classic TV network when The WonderYears debuted back in '97. That was also around the time they started cutting episodes on us, so those two things kinda Killed N@N's rep.

But, by then, we had TV Land as the home of the great classic shows, so it all balances out.

I know, I can remember when I was REALLY Little I used to watch the older shows on Nick@Nite such as "The Monkees", "Dick Van Dyke", "I Love Lucy" (Still on N@N), "F-Troop", etc. So now they are buying shows soon such as Fresh Prince, Rosanne & Cheers. I am EXTREMLEY UPSET about this, I HATE the new sitcoms, all their jokes are about sex, the writing is on THE WALL FOR GOODNESS SAKES! All the new sitcoms have this ONE TRACK mind (Sex), I DO NOT LIKE THIS! I don't know what happend to Nick@Nite the past year. I Hate those shows ("Rosanne" & "Fresh Prince"). LET'S FACE IT, N@N NEW PROGRAMMING ARE DOWN THE TUBE (except for FOL and Three's C"), INCLUDING THE NEW SITCOMS! The last show that I even liked would end in 1991, which was "Mama's Family". Thats why I am taping all the CLASSIC T.V. SHOWS, including buying them from COLUMBIA HOUSE, so when the new shows INVADE all our stations, I'LL BE ENJOYING ALL THE CLASSICS! Whoever thinks the NEW SHOWS are down the tube - post a reply here!

I hear you Nick10!! I agree with everything you say about new sitcoms. I also think that one of the last good sitcoms was "Mama's Family", but I also like "The Golden Girls" which ended in 1992, and there might be a couple others.
