only accepted Vanessa's relationship with Dabnis when he found Dabnis had his own house. So the message from that scene was only be friendly with your daughter's boyfriend if he has a house. Cliff and Clair were so materialistic.

The pattern was that when the older kids moved out they got married had kids and moved back in because of circumstance. I don't blame them for being hesitant!

It was still wrong for him to only like Dabnis because of what he had and not for who he was.
