I was just wondering about this as I was watching an episode the other day. Did Redd Foxx ever say where he got the idea for his funny walk that he used on Sanford & Son from?

I didn't hear where the walk came from but it was mentioned that Redd Foxx added the walk to the show. |

The walk, probably came from the Kingfish on Amos & Andy. Fred's mannerisms were almost parallel to those of the Kingfish. In fact, there are several similarities between the 2 shows. Fred's calling Lamont Big Dummy came from Amos & Andy as that is what the Kingfish always called Andy. Fred like Kingfish always tried to hustle a buck but rarely did any work for it. The ideas for several episodes of S&S came from A&A.

from the similarities of the two show, i would say that s&s was directly based on it. as far as the characterizations go.

But the fun part of this for me is the fact that every character on S&S has an A&A counterpart: Fred/Kingfish; Bubba/Andy; Grady/Lightnin'; Esther/Sapphire; Lamont/Amos. So, if anything, "Sanford and Son" was indeed a modern "Amos 'n' Andy" retelling (with gentler stereotypes, to be sure...) |
