Default Rhino to Release "Jem" on DVD in 2004!

http://tvshowsondvd.com/newsitem.cfm?NewsID=665

Jem is my name, no one else is the same!

We have some truly outrageous news for Jem fans today, because the Jem Mailing List reports that a 4-disc DVD set is now in-the-works from Rhino for a release in the first half of 2004!

According to the article, the set will include the first 26 episodes from "The Beginning" to "Glitter and Gold", and that "there will be an interview with series creator Christy Marx on the DVD, and they are hoping to have her participate in creating other special features (commentary, etc.)".

They go on to report that "depending on sales, additional season sets could follow on a 3-6 month basis". That is, if The Misfits don't sabotage the plans! Our thanks to theAnimation Insider website for relaying this information, and in the process passing on that "series creator Christy Marx has confirmed all news". We also give our thanks to John Kilduff for bringing all this to our attention in the first place.

I've known about this for a while and I'm soooo excited I'm glad to see that TVShowsOnDVD.com is finally reporting it. I also have a feeling that the set will do extremely well since there are so many die-hard Jem fans (such as myself) out there.

Go to Rhino's cartoon survey http://www.rhino.com/fun/contests/vi...03survey.lasso
"Thundercats" is among the choices. There's a choice for "Other" and you can type in She-Ra and My Little Pony (BTW, I wouldn't be surprised if Rhino owned the right to My Little Pony). I wonder if I should put The Great Space Coster in the "Other" column. I think Rhino may own that as well. It's not really an animaed series, but it's for kids and it had animated shorts. God, I would buy that in a heartbeat.

But the news about Jem is very exciting indeed. So far my only means of watching it is on the tapes I bought used from Amazon.com or episodes I downloaded from Jem Unlimited. As I said before, I am confident that the DVD will sell well because I know that there are a lot of die-hard Jem fans out there.

As an extra I wish they'd include a bonus audio CD that contains all the rockin' Jem & The Holograms and the Misfits songs from the season that's being released. But I must be honest, I don't think that will happen Oh well, at least we're getting Jem on DVD

No offense intended to any Jem fans by my next comment, but:

I just can't believe that cartoons like this are coming out on dvd, while cartoons like THE FLINTSTONES, JONNY QUEST, SPACE GHOST, THE JETSONS, and many, many more sit on studio shelves collecting dust. The world of tv on dvd is really screwed up right now!!!

B&W "I don't begrudge a show like Jem being released, I just want to see some real honest to goodness CLASSIC cartoons released as well - is that too much to ask?!!!" fan

None taken I see what you're getting at. I'm surprised those shows haven't been released yet as well. I think you're right, though, TV shows on DVD in general is pretty warped. Like on the sitcom/drama circuit, it seems like mostly new shows are being released, even shows that are still in first run or shown heavily in syndication. I don't see why they can't go way back and release the older stuff first to get them out of the way. THEN work on the newer stuff. I do have to admit, though, that more older stuff is being released, and that eventually just about everything old will be released. The TV show on DVD craze is still quite new.

Thanks for understanding my point. I've talked to alot of different people that are "in the know", so to speak, concerning the tv to dvd business (including the head honcho in the tv to dvd dept. at Paramount Studios). And here's the conclusion all these studios have come to, and my fear concerning their conclusion.

Because teenagers and college age students are the ones with the most "disposable" income, these companies are releasing new shows in mass to quickly capitalize on these young people's open wallets before they hit the real world and find they can't spend money on a bunch of dvds anymore because they now have bills coming in that must be paid for.

This is what is working against older shows being released. The studios feel like the audience for the older shows will not be as likely to buy the dvds because they can't spend as much on pure entertainment due to the many other bills that life puts on them (mortgages, doctor bills, etc).

And the fact is that young kids today are not as into the shows I mentioned because the shows aren't aired as much as they used to be. Instead, they've been replaced in the afternoon cartoon blocks by "new" animation shows. So when kids go to the store they beg mom and dad to get them the new Cartoon Network or Nick cartoon on dvd, while having little interest in any older show that might be available.

The bottom line is this: As each year passes where an older show is NOT released, the potential audience for that show is also getting older and is less likely to buy the series (because of all the bills in life that keep rising as you get older). And to be honest, in my discussions with some of these studio people, I can tell you straight forward that they guarantee NOTHING when it comes to whether or not they will release older shows.

I used to believe like you did that eventually ALL the older shows would be released. But after talking with the people I have, I don't believe that anymore. I think there is, unfortunately, a very real chance that great old classics like FATHER KNOWS BEST, LEAVE IT TO BEAVER, THE FUGITIVE, THE MUNSTERS, THE SIX MILLION DOLLAR MAN, JONNY QUEST, and - as impossible as it sounds - even a show like THE FLINTSTONES, may NEVER BE RELEASED!!! Although I do have more hope for that show (the Flintstones) than any of the others I mentioned.

Well, I hate to put a damper on anything, but what I've said is the absolutely truth. These companies are only in it for the money, and if they feel their potential target audience is an older one that has less disposable cash, they will not release a series to dvd. Maybe that explains my disappointment with MANY of the recent dvd releases.

B&W "sad but true" fan
