Default Finished looking at the CATM eps, and the only thing i don't like is

ED BROWN-he is irritable, not funny, dry, dull, unpleasant, and just an EXTREMELY annoying character.

So other than that, everyone else is cool and the show is ok.

Default CATM

I always thought Ed Brown was the perfect foil for Chico. He started out very cranky and unrelenting but by the 3rd season it was very apparent that Ed had grown to love Chico. If he would have been nice and easy going like Chico, the show would have not been half as funny. I think Chico spent a lot of time just trying to help the old man who had taken him in off the streets. A very endearing storyline indeed. Ed was hilairous and underneath that crusty exterior beat a very warm heart. I loved the tug of war going on between the two main characters. Ed was really a soft touch, especially when it came to Chico. All Chico had to say was "Do it for me Ed, please! and the old man would melt. Jack and Freddie were born to work with each other. Take another look, maybe you'll see the magic after a second time around.

I looked at 6 eps so far. Ed has the same personality as Archie Bunker but the only difference is Archie said funnier things.

Keep going, you're just getting started. The best shows are yet to come. Six shows doesn't give you a fair and complete picture. Please...they are wonderful together. Ed softens considerably as the seasons progress. You will see a real love and respect growing between the two men. It has father and son written all over it. Thanks for your remarks, they are very welcomed.

My favorite Ed Brown quotes:

"Get outta my garage!!!"

"Cant'ya get this Mexican jumping bean to jump out of here?"

"You should've seen what happened when I was leaving the bar---someone stepped on my back!"

..and anytime he said a toast before drinking his bourbon.

Some of my favorite "Ed" moments on CATM:
When Ed and Chico were in the hospital and Ed is telling Louie about his childhood..
When he plays piano and sings in the piano bar.

Jack (Ed) is hilarious and the grouchy old man character is so opposite from Chico's character. But they go together so well!

When I first saw "Chico and the Man" I didn't find Ed all that funny either. In fact, I really didn't find the show that funny. But I kept watching, and now I've come to like all the characters. And that includes Raul. He's no Freddie, but that's not his fault.
Well, with the exception of Monica from the last six or so episodes. Not only was she a bad actress, but how people was Ed going to let live in his garage. Remember the trouble when it was discovered that Chico lived in the van.

One particular episode you may like is mainly about Ed it's the paino bar episode, in that one you begin to see why Ed is the cranky bad tempered old goat. And there is a warmth that comes out of that one especially as he sings his wifes favorite songs.

Trust me. If you watch more episodes you will love the show. The charm of Ed Brown was he was the grouch whereas Freddie was the nice one trying to be his friend & Ed eventually softened up towards Chico. In the RAUL RUNS AWAY episode which is a really sad episode & will have you breaking out the hankies, Ed gets sad & cries & then runs off to his room after Raul finds Chicos old things...

Default The First Show

I have to say the first episode was one of my favorites. I didnt actually realize it but I remembered something from that very FIRST show and I've carried it with me all my life. Remember when Chico used the booze to wash the grease off the tool bench and then he put a daisy in the bottle......Ed said it was dumb....and Chico said it wasnt, 'cause in Spanish daisy was Margarita...aka....Margaret....Ed's wife's name. I always remembered that daisy in Spanish was Margarita...tho I didnt realize it was from that first show..... I guess he really DID make an impression on a little girl .... lol

It is so sweet because to me it says that he had been 'keeping an Eye' on the old man even while margaret was alive because he knew her name...he said i've been watching you since i was little, but that statement and show of resoect for his late wife just shows it even more!
