Anyone know what I could do about this?

I finally got my out of date video editing software onto XP and I can open up videos now and edit them, but I can't capture anything because I keep getting an error (see below).

I did everything I could think of to fix the error but it's still not working.

This is what I've done..

- made sure my printer port is set to ECP mode on the BIOS menu instead of the usual mode used for the printer.
- made sure the device was in the printer port nice and snug
- and made sure the thing was plugged in


AAOT or somebody could you help figure this out? The thing I'm using is from 1998 made by Adaptec FutureTel called VideOh!
I don't understand why it won't work other than maybe it's because of the computer I'm using, but before I had problems with the editing program because I couldn't get it to run but now I switched the properties of the program in 'compatiblity' to 'run this program in Windows 95' and since then the program comes up, but the device won't work meaning it won't capture screenshots or videos.

XP obviously doesnt see the device, have you tried to install XP drivers for it (it came out before XP, so the driver it came with wont work, and if XP came with drivers it would've seen it) - here is Adaptec's download page for the driver, and here is a help page in their knowledgebase, but I think all you need to do is get the proper driver installed and it should work.

I downloaded the first one because it looks like the only one that would've worked and the rest of them are for the newer version of VideOh and I don't have that. The first one didn't work either it said I have no video hardware or something like that.

I looked in System > Device Manager and the device I'm using is listed (FutureTel Video Sphinx Pro) and there are no errors.

this is plugged into the Parallel Port correct? (same one the printer uses - D-shaped, two rows of pins, 25 total pins)

is anything else plugged into same port, or have you ever connected a printer to it?

has this ever worked for you in XP?

Yep, it's plugged into the parallel port. And it's set to ECP mode to capture stills and videos instead of the normal printer setting.

I've never had a printer hooked up to this computer 'cause I don't have a printer for my computer.

The capturing device? Well, I never could get the program it came with to work with XP until I discovered that I could change the settings so it works on XP in an Windows 95/98 mode. I could never get the device itself to work with any other programs because I don't know how to make it work with any others except the one it came with. So no, I've never gotten it to work in XP due to the program. But now I've got the program working and I still get that error.
When I go to check it in SYSTEM it says that the device is working properly, yet I can't get it to capture.

OK, it is good that nothing else is connected to it - we can rule that out then, which leaves us with a driver problem. We either have an incompatible driver loaded or the device may not have a compatible XP driver.

You said that it worked with a different computer before, do you remember WHAT it was listed as in the Device Manager? I'm hoping that XP is automatically loading an incorrect driver for it, which is preventing it from loading the correct driver...

In the Control Panel does it list the device in the "Scanners and Cameras" group/folder?
If it does will it let you access the properties or open it?

In the Device Manager it is listed as "FutureTel Video Sphinx Pro", what group is this under?
If you go to the "View" menu at the top of the window, and click on the "Show hidden devices" does it show any new devices?

Are there ANY devices with errors (any red "X"'s or question marks)?

Nope, it lists under sound, video, and game controllers. Yes, it does let me open the properties. I've added a pic to show you. It says it's on LTP 1.4, but to get it work it's supposed to be on ECP or something like that for the port. I've done that in 'Integrated Perpherals' under setup when you first turn on the computer to set the mode to epp or ecp. Well, anyway I uninstalled the device once through it's properties, restarted the computer and the computer finally recognized it as new hardware.

Now, in the found new hardware wizard it has one driver listed under 'adaptec,' but i'm not sure if thats even the right one since my hardware is pretty outdated. The driver is called Adaptec AVC-2000 Device. I'm not sure if I should go ahead and install that because I'm afriad it will screw up the whole computer and if it does that I'll never hear the end of it.

And no there are no devices with red x's.

LTP 1.4 is just the NAME of the port, it shouldn't matter, when it says it needs ECP mode, it just means it needs the parallel port to act as an Enhanced Capabilities Port - it is a smart device instead of a dumb printer... we should be fine there

I have a manual, but it really only says that if the device isn't working check to see if it's plugged in and in ecp mode, which on both of my computers it is so I'm thinking it is a driver problem. Should I just go ahead and install that one driver and see what happens?

I don't know how much your gonna find on their site. Thats the problem everything they have on their site now has nothing to do with the certain device I have. There may be one on there called videoh dvd, but it's something totally different from what I have. They took down everything that would help in my case thats what makes this so difficult.

yeah, it IS frustrating trying to find the proper info on their site, do we have the EXACT name/model of it correctly?

Well, I installed that driver, but it still didn't get it to work. I still get this error message when I run the hardware test (from the Clipview software).

What's a PCI Bus? Because that's what it says my ECP printer port is located when I look it up in device manager. And like I said before the FutureTel device is located on LPT1.4. Is that on the same port?

Yeah, basically it means that this driver is telling the software that the capture card is a PCI card (the PCI bus is the group of expansion slots inside the pc) - which pretty much means that the driver will NOT work.

Well, the fact that Adaptec has removed most of their info on this device from their site is NOT a good sign, but I'll keep lookin - it may turn out that there IS no compatible XP driver though - in a lot of cases companies wont bother writing new drivers for old devices....
