ANAHEIM, California -- Authorities said one person was killed in a roller coaster accident at Disneyland and ten others were injured.

Officials said a locomotive broke loose from a train in a tunnel on Disneyland's Big Thunder Mountain Railroad.

An Anaheim, California city spokesman said the man who died at the scene had to be extricated from the first passenger car where he'd been riding.

Earlier, a hospital reported one victim in critical condition, while police said the injuries ranged from moderate to minor. Eight people were taken to the hospital.

It's also unclear how many people were on the train because some left the area on their own after the accident.

The roller coaster takes people on a twisting, turning ride aboard what is supposed to be a runaway train in the Old West.

holy crap. that was my favorite ride at DL. You'd expect that from Six Flags, but not at Disney

I've been to that ride a lot of times and when I went on it, it felt like the train could just fall right off it's tracks because it goes so fast and there are all these sudden jerks and turns. I'll avoid that one until they figure out what went wrong.

I went on the one at DisneyWORLD about 3 years ago already, but it did feel like I was about to fall off. This is a shocker! At Disney, my God!

never been to disneyland or disneyworld. (i know, i'm deprived) but i always wanted to.

that's freaky though. was it at a six flags where a rollercoaster got stuck upside down?

This really surprises me.

The newer rides at Disneyland are all computer controlled, and those computers should detect even the slightest problems and automatically shut down the ride until it can be inspected.

Once, years ago, I was on the Thunder Mountain ride and the computer did just that: it shut down the ride. We were taken off the ride and led out of the whole thing through the control area where the computer consoles are located. No mishaps; no injuries. It was kind of fun, actually. Definitely different.

I think the problems with park rides nowadays are possibly a combination of three things:

1) The rides are getting too fast and furious.
2) The equipment is getting old.
3) People have become too dependent on computers to do the work that would be better served by applying the human touch of observation and intuition.

Very tragic and disturbing.

That is the main reason why I don't like those rides. Anything that leaves the ground I try to avoid. I went to Disneyworld a couple years ago with some friends and while they went on the rollercoasters I just walked around snapping pictures.

Sad news on the roller coaster ride in Disneyland. I used to go on the roller coaster since I was a kid, I'm not going on that ride anymore. I was afraid of heights. In Disneyland, the ride has a few injuries and a death in an accidental ride was worst since Coney Island's Astroland in Brooklyn had the worst injuries on every ride.

i rode this one... its not really a rollercoaster.... IMO, I've also rode Woody Woodpecker at Universal, lol. But im terrified of those huge coasters.

I'm too chicken to go on roller coasters...but I guess that can be a good thing because stuff like that can happen.

I rode the one at Disney World in FLORIDA. I doubt I'll ever ride it again though...even if it is in a different state. lol
