Another VCR Breakdown...suggestions for replacement? - Sitcoms Online Message Boards

Well, another VCR of mine has bit the dust. So, tommorow, I'll be getting a replacement. With a Best Buy and a Wal-Mart in the area, what brand of replacement would you suggest?

I usually go through VCRs every year to year-and-a-half, because I use it EVERYDAY (and, I'm not kidding).

With all the money you spend on VCR's, you should just buy a DVD recorder. They last a while.

I have a VCR that I use just about every day too, and I've had it since 1998. What the heck are you doing with a JVC VCR - go get a GE one (if they still have any).

I have a DVD player for movies but still use my VCRs for taping TV shows.
My VCR works fine, but started doing something strange about a week ago. When I press eject, the tape comes flying out really fast. It fell on my foot the first time. Now I make sure I have my hand there to catch it.
My psycho Sony VCR.

LOL. My foot didn't think it was so funny. Actually, the tape flew into my chest and fell on my foot.
I'll tell you, the tapes come shooting out so fast, that if I swear if I wasn't there to catch them, they would sail across the room like a frisbie.

Usually when my VCR dies I have a tape in it and can't get it out.

Geez, you haven't had yours long. I've had my vcr since about 1996, 1997 and it still works. Did you always leave it on or something?

Exactly. I have a VCR I've had since March/April 1998 (the manufacture date on the back is March 23, 1998) and it has this thing where it automatically turns itself off.

Before the remote for my mom's VCR quit working this year (the VCR worked fine but it was the remote that died), she'd had it since 1990. My dad has had one of his VCRs since 1989 and my stepmom since 1991. One of my neighbors has a VCR that she has had since 1986!! No lie. It STILL works, too.

Oh man! We have had the same VCR for 10 years and it has worked just fine! (A Sony that we got back in 93 with all the bells and whistles on it.) We don't use it much. The only thing is that the calender for automatic timer recorder only goes through the year 2008. So, on January 1st, 2009 if the thing is still working, I won't be able to do automatic timer recording anymore.

However, the newer models don't last that long! (5 years max) You could get a VCR for $75-$100. I would get a Sony. They are a little more expensive, but worth it.

If you don't record anything get a DVD player. You can get a really nice DVD player for about $200.

Another option would be if you have a satalite dish to get a Tivo. You can record and play and pause up to 50 hours of programming without a VCR. If you have digital cable the digital video recorder (DVR) combines a digital box with the features of a Tivo. You can store up to 50 hours of programming, have VCR like control of anything you watch on TV without tapes, record up to 3 shows at once and have picture in a picture (PIP) and instant replay on any television. You would however have to copy your stuff from a Tivo or DVD unit to a VCR if you wanted to save something indefinetly.

BTW, does anyone know why a Tivo unit does not work with many cable boxes?

People are also getting into DVD recorders but they are quite expensive $600-800. I would get a good VCR if you tape a lot (a Sony) if you don't tape a lot, get a DVD player. The Tivo and DVR units are for people that do a lot of recording. So you have several options.
