Sad too many posts -- I think I'm leavin

Hey all --

I know many of you won't care, and that's ok, but I really think I may head off this message board. Granted, there is a lot of stuff, but there is TOO MUCH stuff. I usually check it late at night (11pm-12am), and I can hardly find where the posts ended that I read the night before and the new ones have started. There are a lot of duplicate posts (not the same words, but the same topics), and I guess people on here don't seem to care about looking for information that might already be on here.

Is there an option to delete old posts? I'd be willing to go back and delete some of mine, and I would hope many others would as well. I just don't see the need to keep posts on episodes that aired several months ago, that no one seems to go back to. Perhaps if we could delete our old messages, that would help eliminate all the "junk" that still exists out there.

This message board is, without a doubt, the most popular of the boards. Because of that, we all need to be a little bit more thoughtful about posting. I may be a little gripey about the whole thing, but there have got to be other post-ers out there who feel similarly, though not as strongly, as myself. I'd rather just enjoy the show for what it is, without looking for minor flaws and hairstyle comments.

I'm not saying I am leaving just yet, but I really hope that people that feel the same post on this topic, and perhaps give some suggestions to this problem. Thanks...

Jim

I would be sad to see you leave. I'll offer you my comments - deleting old posts would not solve the problem of too many posts in my opinion. It's pretty rare that an old topic is even brought up and just because it's been discussed earlier doesn't mean somebody new can't offer their opinion or different insight on it. Let's face it, certain topics like what's your favorite episode or who's your favorite character are unavoidable with this many people posting to the board. I'm sure there are many more people who only read the messages and don't post at all or very often.

I do not expect everybody to read every single topic or post, I don't do it even myself. I will choose topics that interest me and track those once or at most twice a day. Like the Survivor posts, I have no interest in that so I haven't been following that thread. The who's your favorite posts and opinion type posts I've read before so I usually don't follow those.

You say you check once a day, I'm sorry I can't buy that. I've seen you post and online at all different times of the day.

I could try an institute some kind of 3 new topics or posts a day rule, but how could it really be enforced? People would just register under multiple names (like they do any way now) or not register at all.

I can't deny this is the most popular board, over a 1/3 of the total posts come from this board alone.

I see people unsubscribe from mailing lists all the time due to the high volume of mail - there's really nothing can be done about that either..

TJ - how about a suggestion? I don't know how much work this would require, but maybe automatically sending out a FAQ to anyone who signs up would help. Maybe if people knew about the search feature or understood how to use it, we wouldn't see so many repeated topics.

Also, I'm as guilty as anyone else, but maybe we should make more of an effort to keep the threads on topic. Posts about favorite songs and do you like chocolate milk really don't need to be here and push on-topic posts much further down the list. But as TJ says, you don't need to read every single post. Skip any topics that don't appeal to you.

I hope you don't leave, jayman. I think that you make great contributions to this board.

I agree. I wouldn't leave. Just skip the ones you aren't interested in and read the ones you are. You're a great asset to the board and I myself have, way in the beginning in December, wanted to leave but changed my mind once I found out (about a minute later, hehe) what a great board this is. I'm happy I stayed and I hope you do the same!!!

That would seriously suck if you left jayman. But I do agree with you, some of the posts are getting repititious(did I spell that right?). I think everyone should listen to the suggestions you and TJ made.

TJ --

Agreed. I have posted at different times of the day and such. However, now that I am back in school (college), I don't have a lot of time during the day to get online to "play."

I understand the suggestions you have made, and I appreciate them. However, it's hard to "only read the posts that interest you." I really do enjoy reading the posts, and I try to keep up once a day. But things get pushed down, around, and to the top so much, that I get aggravated trying to find the topics that I want to keep up on.

I probably will stay on. I was up working last night, and was frustrated. However, I do wonder is a FAQ list could be posted or sent out to all the registered post-ers like Coily2 said. That way, they would know to be concious of what they put on the board.

Thanks for understanding... Jim

I just had another one of my brilliant ideas. This board is overflowing, and my boards need SERIOUS help, so why don't we move some of this stuff to my board at
www.tvrpgworld.homestead.com/fol.html

That would relieve the excess on this board, and bring some more attention to mine.

Killing two birds with one stone.
